Sophie stood across the street from the steel door. Crowds of
people passed in front of her. She bobbed her head back and
forth, trying to keep a clear view of the door. She waited. She
checked her phone for any missed texts or calls.
Just as she thought her toes would go numb, Mitch and
Amanda came out the door. Sophie held up her phone to take a
picture of Mitch exiting hospital property. It turned out the photo
wasn’t necessary. Four cop cars pulled up with lights flashing.
Sheldon and Rihanna walked up and stood next to Sophie.
She didn’t need to ask what they were doing there, just as she
didn’t need to ask Adam when he showed up. They all watched as
the cops cuffed Mitch and loaded him into the back of the cruiser.
Sheldon watched, saddened, as his half brother was taken away.
The two couples shouted a thanks to Amanda, who was walk
ing away in the direction of downtown. Without looking back,
she gave a wave over her shoulder.
