“
You know, Adam, parenting is going to be so vanilla compared
to the last three and a half months. Are you ready for that?”
Sophie asked from the back seat. She sat next to Danny in his
infant seat. The snow on their neighborhood streets was mostly
melted.
Sophie’s phone rang. “Hey, Kate! Yes, we’re on our way
home. Finally.” Pause. “A baby shower would be awesome! We
talked about that before, didn’t we? Like a lifetime ago.” Sophie
laughed. “Let’s talk tomorrow and plan it for the next time you
come down.” She clicked off.
It was dusk, and the streetlights were on. Every time they
drove under one of the lights, Danny squeezed his eyes shut.
“Hey, look at this.”
“What?” Adam asked, looking in the rearview mirror.
Sophie put her hand on Danny’s head like a visor, shading
his eyes. He stopped closing them to the flashes of light and kept
his eyes open. She put her face in front of his and watched as he
turned to look at her.
“Oh my God! Adam, stop the car. You’ve got to see this!”
Sophie cried, bursting with happiness.
