Sophie’s phone rang. She draped a burp rag over her shirt, then
lifted Danny onto her shoulder.
“Hello?”
“Hey, it’s me,” Rihanna whispered.
“Why are you whispering?”
“Mitch is in the other room.”
“What’s he doing there? I thought he was arrested.”
“He was, but they let him go on his own personal recogni-
something-or-other.”
“Recognizance,” Sophie said in disgust. “How did that hap
pen? Don’t they know what he’s done? What’s wrong with them?”
Rihanna cupped her hand around the mouthpiece and spoke
quietly. “He said that he’s supposed to stay at least five hundred
yards away from any hospital. They’re talking so quietly I didn’t
catch everything, but I did hear Mitch say something about going
back to Metro.”
Sophie jiggled Danny as she paced. That feeling of impend
ing doom was back.
Rihanna was talking. “Sophie, be careful. Just because he’s
supposed to stay away from the hospital doesn’t mean he has to
stay away from you.”
“Thanks, Ri. I doubt he’ll try anything with me. But I appre
ciate the heads-up.”
After she’d hung up with Rihanna, her phone buzzed with an
incoming text. It was Amanda telling her where to be in an hour.

CHAPTER 96
Mitch and Sheldon talked quietly. They didn’t want to start
arguing again. Mitch needed help with a plan.
“Why don’t you just chill out and wait for your arraignment?”
“I can’t do that. I feel like a caged animal waiting to be eaten.”
“You have to show up at court on Monday. If you don’t at
least do that, you’re screwed.”
Mitch brushed his hand across his newly buzzed hair. “Shit,
Sheldon. I don’t know.” He stared at the floor. “I’ve got to figure
this out.”
“Figure what out? What don’t you get? You need to go home
and wait for the arraignment.”
Mitch leaned forward with his elbows on his knees. “You
wanna know what you could do to help?”
“Sure, anything.”
“Promise me when I get out, we can go back to working
together as a team. You and me, working on the Foundling proj
ect. That’s the only way I’ll be able to get back on track. It’ll
be my second chance. Please, Sheldon. Work with me. Give me
something to live for.”
“You’re jumping the gun, Mitch. We don’t even know if you’re
going to jail. We don’t know if your medical license will be revoked,
and if it is, when it will be reinstated. There are a lot of ifs, Mitch.”
“Okay, but let’s just say I’m free to practice medicine again in,
say, two years. Will you let me back in on the project? You know
you’ll need me.”
