Triage was cranking. Mitch had two other docs working in triage
with him. He was in the middle of examining and admitting
one mother, twenty-nine weeks. When he looked up, he saw
Adam Young outside of triage talking with Alicia, one of the
nurses. She was searching the admitting desk area.
He watched as they talked more. Alicia smiled at Adam,
then swiped her badge to open the triage door. Mitch went back
to what he was doing. He drew from one of the vials in his pocket
and injected it into the patient’s IV. He patted her hand and reas
sured her. When he looked up again, Adam was standing against
the wall, six feet away, facing him. As soon as Mitch looked over,
Adam turned away.
Alicia came over to Adam. “I’m sorry, Mr. Young. I can’t find
your wife’s planner anywhere. It’s just not here. I hope she has
another way to reach her clients.”
“Thank you for looking.” Adam tucked his phone up his
jacket sleeve. “It was quite a while ago that she was here. I’m sure
she can figure something out.”
Mitch called out to Adam. “Adam? What are you doing in
here? Alicia, please get Mr. Young out of here. He doesn’t belong
in here. His wife and baby are upstairs. If he gives you any trou
ble, call security.”
Mitch turned back to what he had been doing, but not until
he was sure Adam was out of triage
