The following day, Sophie was busy changing Danny’s diaper.
Kim came in and gave Sophie a happy good morning, then got
started taking care of a baby at the other end of the pod. All the
other mothers were out of the NICU, either showering or getting
breakfast.
“Mrs. Young.”
Startled, Sophie turned around. Dr. Wagner stood right
behind her. Her heart started to race. She saw a look of anger
flash across his eyes. Quickly, his expression softened.
“I understand you were upstairs talking to Mr. Buckley about
some dissatisfaction you have with my bedside manner.” That
voice so unnerved her.
“Yes, I—”
“Mrs. Young, I apologize if my bedside manner made you
uncomfortable. I certainly didn’t mean to offend you. I’d like to
think I’m good at delivering babies. I had no idea I made you or
any of my patients feel uncomfortable. Please accept my humble
apology.”
Caught off guard, Sophie answered, “Well, okay. Thank you.”
He nodded his head slightly, then turned and walked away,
leaving Sophie to digest his apology
