Once a Doormat Now Untouchable Novel Chapter 51-100

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 51

Sydney was young, kind, and attentive with her patients. Over the years, several older ones had tried to play

matchmaker. Eventually, she started wearing her wedding ring all the time, which finally made them stop.

She remembered Agatha well—a woman who had once fussed endlessly over her grandson’s marriage. Time had

softened her.

Sydney smiled wryly. “Ms. Nordwood, I’m getting a divorce.”

“Divorce!” Agatha’s face turned solemn, and she said firmly, “Good! I overheard the call just now, but I wasn’t

eavesdropping. I swear. Let me tell you, cheating men are the worst. If you stay with him, you’ll only suffer more.”

Sydney felt the warmth in Agatha’s wrinkled hands–a warmth she hadn’t known in years. Her voice softened without

meaning to. “I know. I’m already going through the process.”

She placed a hand over Agatha’s wrist and gently changed the topic. “How have you been feeling lately?”

“Oh, much better. Your medicine worked wonders.” Agatha waved it off, then circled back. “Listen, dear. I may be old, but divorce isn’t something to fear at your age.

Sydney let out a soft laugh. “Are you trying to set me up with your grandson?”

Agatha looked at her seriously. “How did you guess?”

Sydney grinned. “Well, Ms. Nordwood, I’m a divorcee. Are you sure about this?”

“Yes, yes, I’ve thought it through.” Agatha nodded with an approving smile. “Divorce isn’t your fault. Second marriages are perfectly fine. But my grandson’s temperament is tricky. He’s closed off. Might not be a good match for you.”

Sydney laughed, then asked, “Should I get your medicine ready?”

“Yes, just a three–day dose. I’ll come back after that.” Agatha’s expression softened as she handed over a small charm.

“I had this blessed this morning at Bellroad Temple. Carry it. It’ll keep you safe in the days ahead.”

After Agatha left, the young nurse by the door couldn’t help teasing, “Dr. Wilson, she wasn’t here for medicine. She came to find a granddaughter–in–law!”

Sydney smiled. “She’s just worried about her grandson.”

Still, she wondered how difficult the man could be if even his grandmother spoke that frankly.

Chapter 51

Later that afternoon, Sydney had some time off.

Tiffany, who had the day free, came to meet her after work. They planned to have lunch and go shopping.

Later that evening was Bruce’s birthday, and Sydney needed to pick up the gift she had ordered.

“This is extravagant,” Tiffany said, surprised, as Sydney picked a custom pen from the store. It was a priceless piece

handcrafted by a master artisan.

Sydney smiled. “Bruce gave me a lovely gift last year. I wanted to return the favor.”

“You can’t keep up with the wealthy without a little money,” Tiffany muttered.

Sydney nodded. “I just hope my savings last a while longer.”

Then again, maybe she didn’t need to worry. Adeline was probably already hard at work searching for a new daughter- in–law for the Hampton family. Once the next bride was chosen, there’d be no reason to invite Sydney again. It would only be awkward.

That night, Bruce’s birthday party was held at the exclusive Luxon Club.

When Sydney entered the VIP room, most of the faces were familiar. But to her, they belonged to Caleb and Julian’s

world, not hers. If she ever fell out with Caleb, most of them would likely pretend not to know her.

“Glad you brought your bestie!” Bruce greeted warmly. “Make yourself at home.”

Sydney nodded. “She had the day off, so I brought her along.”

The room was crowded, so she led Tiffany into a quieter space nearby.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 52

“Absolutely hilarious. I always wondered why she ran straight inside the moment she arrived. Turns out she’s just scared of being embarrassed.”

“You’re only realizing that now? If she were still Julian’s sister, the Hampton family would show her some respect. But she cut ties with him. Marrying into the Hamptons was her way of climbing the social ladder. Now that Caleb wants to reconcile with his true love, she must feel completely helpless.”

Sydney had come over just to listen in, but it didn’t take long to realize the gossip centered on her.

“So why hasn’t she filed for divorce yet?”

“Money, obviously. What else? She’s just some mid–level doctor with no family backing. She leaned on the Sterlings for

the first half of her life, and now she’s clinging to the Hamptons for the second.”

Tiffany’s expression darkened. She started to rise, but Sydney gently caught her arm.

“It’s fine. I’ll handle it.” She stood and walked off.

Back in the inner room, the two women hadn’t noticed her yet and kept talking.

“She looks so sweet, but who would’ve guessed how calculating she is. She’s draining him dry.”

“Really? She’s an orphan. No parental guidance at all. What decent man would go for someone like that?”

One of them kept going–until Sydney tapped her shoulder. “What are you talking about? Who isn’t a good catch?”

“Who else? It’s that Syd-” She turned and froze, caught off guard by Sydney’s sudden appearance.

Her voice wavered as she scrambled to cover. “We meant your sister–in–law! How can she be so shameless? Flirting so

openly with your husband.”

Just then, Sydney noticed Caleb seated beside Penelope. To anyone unaware of the situation, they might have looked like the married couple.

Maybe sensing the shift, both Caleb and Penelope turned toward them.

Caleb looked mildly surprised, as if he hadn’t expected her to show up at his friend’s birthday party without warning.

On the other hand, Penelope recovered fast. She rose in her heels and walked over with practiced grace. “Syd, when did

you get here? Come sit with us.”

“I actually came to defend you,” Sydney said, glancing at the two women before offering Penelope a small smile. “They

just called you a shameless homewrecker, Said they saw you cozying up to my husband.”

The color drained from both women’s faces.

One of them blurted, “Sydney, don’t twist our words! We were talking about you, not Penny!”

“Oh? Is that so?”

“Of course!” They straightened, suddenly bold. “Why would we say that about Penny? In love, it’s always the unloved

wife who ends up the mistress.”

In their social circle, everyone knew Sydney was Caleb’s wife in name only. Penelope was the one he truly loved.

Penelope gave a light laugh, smoothly redirecting the tension. “Syd, don’t take it to heart. They’re just being silly. There

are too many people here for drama.”

Sydney smiled faintly, her expression calm. She pressed a button on her phone, and a recording played: “We meant your

sister–in–law! How can she be so shameless? Flirting so openly with your husband.”

The volume was low enough not to disrupt the party, but clear enough for Penelope to hear.

“Turn it off!” Penelope snapped, her composure breaking as she slapped the phone out of Sydney’s hand.

That sharp slap instantly drew everyone’s attention. The shattered phone screen, the vivid handprint on her skin, and Sydney’s reddened eyes told the whole story. She had clearly just been bullied.

It was a pitiful sight.

Caleb’s brow furrowed as he stepped over and picked up the phone. “What happened?”

Penelope tried to shift the blame to Sydney, but the words caught in her throat. There was no way to spin it. How could

she say Sydney had stood up for her and that she’d hit her in return? She couldn’t justify it, not even to herself.

All she could do was glare at the two women before snapping, “They were saying awful things behind my back! It was

horrible.”

The two women looked like they wanted to disappear.

Who would’ve guessed both of Caleb’s women would cause trouble? Especially Sydney. She seemed soft, someone easy

to push around–but once she spoke, she could tear you apart. From this moment on, no one would dare cross her again.

Sydney took back the phone and turned to Penelope. In the same calm, gentle tone Penelope had once used against her,

she said, “Penelope, maybe we should let it go. I might’ve misunderstood them. They were probably just joking. It’s

Bruce’s birthday party. Let’s not make a scene.

11

Despite losing her phone and taking a slap, Sydney was the first to ease the tension.

On the other hand, Penelope felt like she had a mouthful of blood she couldn’t spit out or swallow. She was furious, but

too many eyes were watching. If she lashed out now, she’d only make herself look worse.

Her nails dug into her palm as she forced a strained smile. “You’re right. Let’s not waste time on people like that.”

Caleb’s face remained unreadable. “Apologize.”

The women turned pale. In an instant, they bowed in panic. “We’re sorry, we’re really sorry.”

Penelope tried to keep her composure. “It’s fine, it’s fine-”

“I meant you,” Caleb cut her off, glancing at Sydney’s reddened hand. “Apologize to Sydney.”

Penelope’s eyes widened in disbelief as she stared at him. “What did you just say?”

Frowning, Caleb gently moved her behind Sydney, as if worried she might lash out again. “Syd, Penny has a bit of a

temper. I’m apologizing on her behalf.”

Sydney had received the slap, yet her husband was apologizing on behalf of someone else. Everyone could see where his

loyalties lay.

Sydney’s clear eyes fixed on his. After a long pause, she offered a faint smile. “It’s fine.”

She tucked the broken phone into her purse, pulled out a velvet box, and walked toward Bruce. Her smile brightened,

genuine now. “Happy birthday, Bruce. There’s an emergency at my clinic, and Tiffany’s waiting outside. We’ll be leaving

now.”

With that, she took Tiffany’s hand and left.

Caleb watched her disappear through the doorway, and his chest tightened. Something about that smile didn’t sit right.

It felt like she was truly done with him.

He took a step to follow, but Penelope stumbled, twisting her ankle. She clutched his arm and winced. “Ouch! Cal, help

me.”

He paused, his eyes catching on the pendant slipping from the collar of her blouse. A flicker of realization crossed his

face.

Penelope tilted her head, still seated on the couch. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re worried Sydney’s upset?” Penelope asked gently, suppressing her own unease. “Didn’t you say she’s always so

obedient and sensible? Why would she be upset over something so trivial?”

It made sense. As Caleb replayed the scene in his mind, she hadn’t shed a tear. Her expression had stayed calm. She was

probably fine.

Outside the room, Tiffany held Sydney’s hand tightly.

“Does it hurt?” she asked, her voice full of concern.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 54

Chapter 54

“I’m okay.” Sydney glanced at her reddened hand. Compared to the maids at the Sterling estate, Penelope’s slap was

nothing. Over the years, she had grown tough and thick–skinned. Her pain tolerance far exceeded most people’s.

Tiffany still didn’t look convinced. “We’ll stop by the pharmacy later and get something for it. You didn’t even try to

dodge. Why’d you let her hit you?”

Sydney’s voice stayed soft and steady. “Because getting hit was more effective.”

Tiffany was momentarily at a loss for words. She had always thought she knew Sydney well, but something about

tonight left a weight in her chest. She knew what kind of person Sydney was–pure, kind, quietly resilient. And around

her, Sydney had always stayed cheerful, like a little beam of sunshine.

When Sydney noticed her silence, she rubbed her palm and asked, “Do you think I’m too calculating?”

Tiffany glared at her, tears already sliding down her cheeks. “Are you dumb or what?”

She wiped them away and gave Sydney’s head a rough rub. “I’m upset because I care, okay?”

She couldn’t imagine what Sydney had endured to become so careful around people. Back when they were younger,

Sydney often looked after her because of her messy home life. But in truth, Sydney had always had it worse.

A quiet warmth rose in Sydney’s chest. She smiled. “There’s nothing to feel bad about. It’s all in the past.”

Things now were a thousand times better than before.

“What do you wanna eat? My treat,” Sydney offered.

“Okay.” Tiffany thought for a second, then clung to her arm. “Let’s go grocery shopping. We can cook at home and make

some stew. Sound good?”

“Sounds perfect.”

This winter was especially cold–the perfect weather for homemade stew.

As the white Audi pulled out of the lot, a sleek black Bentley eased in. The two cars nearly brushed past each other.

Elliot squinted at the license plate, frowning. “Isn’t that Ms. Wilson’s friend’s car? It looked like someone was in the

passenger seat too. Didn’t the party just start? She already left?”

Julian looked up from his tablet, his eyes narrowing. “What did you say?”

Peter glanced in the rearview mirror and said, “He said Ms. Wilson already left. That can’t be right. Caleb’s car is still out

front. Weren’t they supposed to arrive together?”

Why did it suddenly feel like his employer’s gaze had turned dangerous? Had he said something wrong? Wasn’t it normal for couples to arrive together?

That sharpness vanished the moment they stepped into the private suite and saw Penelope seated next to Caleb.

Something about the room felt off.

Bruce was in the middle of what looked like a mild argument with Caleb. But as soon as Julian walked in, everyone lit up,

pretending nothing was wrong.

“It’s Julian!”

“Hey, you made it!”

Julian scanned the room lazily and tossed a gift box at Bruce. “Happy birthday.”

Bruce caught it and raised a brow. “Thanks, Jules.‘

Julian didn’t look particularly engaged. He picked a seat with little interest, his gaze drifting toward Caleb and Penelope.

He smirked. “Didn’t bring your number one tonight?”

The jab landed right on cue. Whatever calm had barely settled over the room shattered again.

The two women who had mouthed off earlier were now wondering if it was too late to slip out. Penelope’s smile froze.

What did that mean? If Sydney was number one, then what was she? Number two? And what did that make her? A

mistress. A side piece. Someone who had to stay in the dark.

But that barb wasn’t meant for her–it was aimed straight at Caleb. A man like Julian wouldn’t bother humiliating a

woman like her unless he had a bigger point to make.

Caleb didn’t flinch. “Syd had something to handle. She left early.”

“Oh? So she was here?” Julian’s tone was flat, like he couldn’t be bothered to care.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 55

Chapter 55

“Yeah.” Bruce offered a smooth smile as he gestured toward the silk–wrapped gift box on the table. “Sydney’s been

buried in work. She just dropped off a present and left early.”

Julian’s eyes shifted to the box. A flicker of emotion passed through them.

The earlier tension faded without incident. Everyone drank freely through the second half of the night. As the birthday

star, Bruce kept just sober enough to send off his guests properly.

After seeing off the second–to–last group of friends, he returned to the private room. Julian was still there, calm and

composed, his eyes dark as ink and fixed on him.

“Tell me the truth about what happened tonight,” Julian said, his voice tinged with a quiet chill.

Bruce staggered slightly as he crossed the room, his head clouded with drink. He dropped onto the couch beside Julian.

“Jules, it was just a bunch of women getting jealous, that’s all.” He lowered his voice. “But if you still care about Sydney

-even just as a sister–you should tell her to get a divorce. That kind of marriage is a waste of time.”

It was a rare moment of sincerity from him.

Julian let out a cold laugh and said with a hint of mockery, “She’s hell–bent on throwing herself at Caleb. No one can

stop her.”

Bruce’s bloodshot eyes gleamed with sudden clarity. “Ever think maybe she doesn’t want to?”

Sydney’s place in the Sterling family might have looked stable from the outside, but those within their circle knew

better. She hadn’t had it easy in that house.

Take the online scandal, for example. Eloise always claimed to adore her, yet when the rumors spread like wildfire, the

Sterlings said nothing. Not once did they step forward to defend her.

If she’d been a real granddaughter, the family would’ve shown their power by now. They would’ve stormed the

Hamptons‘ mansion without hesitation.

Yet, they had done nothing. Not a word.

And what had Julian done?

…

The next morning, Bruce stared at the ceiling, piecing it together through the fog of his hangover.

Julian had seemed utterly indifferent. Maybe his drink had sloshed slightly as he had spoken in a cool and detached voice, like water sitting at the bottom of a well.

Still, Bruce remembered the ridiculing edge in his tone. “She had choices. She just doesn’t know her place.”

Bruce frowned. This wasn’t some ordinary falling–out. Something ran deeper between them, something unresolved.

But what? He sighed. It was probably not something he could figure out.

Still bleary–eyed, he shuffled downstairs to open his birthday gifts.

The pen Sydney had picked out was a rare custom piece he’d been trying to get for ages. She’d always been thoughtful

like that. It made all the times he favored her feel worth it.

But when he reached the bottom of the pile, there was no pen.

He turned to a housekeeper. “Hey, where’s that blue silk box I brought home yesterday?”

“Blue silk box?” She paused, thinking. “I don’t think I saw one.”

“No way.” Bruce stood up and grabbed his car keys. He was ready to drive to the club as he suspected that he must have

left it behind.

Just then, the chauffeur stepped in from the courtyard. He’d overheard and called out, “Mr. Wilhelm! You blacked out

last night, remember? Mr. Sterling took that box.”

“He took it?”

“Yeah. He asked about it. You didn’t answer, so he said your silence meant he had the green light.”

‘Green light, my ass. I was passed out cold,‘ he grumbled inwardly.

Bruce scratched his messy hair. Not even in his dreams would he have the guts to ask Julian to give it back.

As he turned to head upstairs, something occurred to him. He pulled out his phone and made a call.

“Hey, Jules. I put a good luck charm Sydney dropped last night in that box. Can you make sure it gets back to her?”

“If you don’t have time, I can return it myself,” Bruce added.

On the top floor of Sterling Corp., Julian turned the charm over in his hand. His strong, arrogant face darkened with concern. This was no ordinary charm. The one from Bellroad Temple was always a peach–blossom charm meant for love, not peace of mind.

“Let me return it.”

Bruce exhaled in relief. “Okay.”

Elliot, who had been watching everything, dropped his jaw. He stared wide–eyed as Julian opened his wallet and

carefully slid the charm into an inner compartment.

What? Weren’t they supposed to return it to Sydney? Just as the question formed, Peter knocked and entered, holding an

almost identical peach–blossom charm.

“Mr. Sterling, your grandmother just sent this over. She asked for it yesterday morning. She swears it works wonders and says it’s better to keep it close,” he reported.

Julian rubbed his brow. “Did she say anything else?”

At that moment, the phone buzzed. It was an ecstatic Agatha. “You got the peach–blossom charm, right? I’m telling you, it works so well! The moment I got it, I heard the female doctor got divorced. She’s single! Don’t look down on her just

because she’s divorced-”

“Grandma,” Julian cut her off coldly. “It’s not about looking down on her. I’m simply not interested in divorced

women.”

The next day, Sydney realized the charm Agatha had given her was missing. She rushed to the clinic, thinking she might

have left it in the exam room.

Marcus happened to walk by and noticed the open door. Peeking in, he looked surprised. “Syd, weren’t you resting

today?”

Sydney lifted her head from under the desk. “Yeah. I lost something and came looking for it.”

Marcus smiled. “Have you found it yet?”

“No.” Sydney patted the desk and stood. “I must’ve dropped it somewhere else.”

Maybe she had slipped it into her bag yesterday and accidentally carried it out.

“What was it? Was it important?”

“Not really.” Sydney smiled and met his gaze. “Weren’t you giving a lecture at Jouleston University today? Why are you

back so soon?”

“A new hire joined the clinic,” Marcus said with a laugh. “My grandfather insisted I personally onboard them.”

Sydney nodded, unsurprised. “Alright, I’ll let you get to it.”

“Need help?” he offered. “Maybe we should go say hi? It’s a woman, so you might find it easier.”

“Sure.”

Why not? If they were coworkers, it would be better to get acquainted.

They headed downstairs together. Sydney’s smile faded when she spotted Penelope.

Penelope’s face lit up with a bright smile. “Sydney, what a coincidence.”

“You two know each other?” Marcus asked in surprise, glancing at Sydney.

She nodded. “Yes, from before. Caleb went to great lengths for her. When things couldn’t work with Alan, he actually

went to the Shepard family instead.”

“Didn’t he?” Penelope seemed eager to recover from yesterday’s setback. “Syd, from now on we’ll be colleagues. I’m

looking forward to working with you.”

“Let’s not assume yet,” Marcus said, sensing subtle tension.

He gently guided Sydney into a nearby consultation room, closed the door behind them, and asked, “Are you divorcing

Caleb because of her?”

Sydney did not hide anything. Her expression remained calm. “Yeah. But you don’t need to go against your family over

this.”

Marcus had started his business with money from the Shepard family. Most of the time, they stayed out of the clinic’s

operations. Occasionally placing someone inside was normal.

“I can talk to them,” he offered.

Sydney smiled faintly. “Marc, knowing Caleb, he doesn’t like owing favors. He probably made some kind of business

deal with your family.”

Marcus’s expression darkened. “Sorry. They mentioned something before, but I didn’t make the connection.”

“It’s not your fault,” Sydney said kindly. “Even if you refused, Caleb would have found another way.

Caleb and Julian were alike at heart. They would not stop until they got what they wanted. Caleb used softer, subtler

tactics, while Julian went straight for the jugular.

When the door opened again, Penelope waited calmly outside, as if she had known everything all along. Just as Sydney

had said, Caleb had made all the arrangements for her in advance. It was no wonder she looked so unbothered.

Penelope held out her hand, smiling smugly. “So, can I count on your guidance now?”

“Of course.” Sydney’s tone stayed steady. “At the clinic, I’m your senior. At home, I’m the legal wife. Whether professionally or personally, looking after you is my responsibility. No need to be polite.”

Without sparing a glance at Penelope’s angry face, Sydney walked off, unbothered.

As Sydney stepped outside the clinic and waited for her rideshare, a sudden thought struck her. She should buy a car.

After divorcing Caleb, she had taken two apartments but not a single vehicle. Relying on rides constantly was no longer

sustainable.

That evening, when she shared the idea with Tiffany, her friend immediately agreed, “Absolutely. When are we going?”

“Tomorrow.” Sydney had always been like this. Once she made up her mind, she didn’t like dragging things out. Just like

the divorce.

The next day, Sydney did morning consultations at the clinic and went alone to a dealership in the afternoon. She

spotted it immediately: a red, limited–edition Porsche 911 in the showroom. Its sleek, fluid lines marked it as a stunning

The passenger door was open, spilling a cascade of flawless Floyd roses, each bloom fresh and dewy.

“This is the only one to arrive in Jouleston in the past six months,” the salesperson said, noticing her interest. “It was

bought before it even arrived by a very generous customer. He said it was for his wife. He should be picking it up any

minute now.”

“Very romantic.” Sydney was not seriously considering it. It was well beyond her budget. The apartments were worth

money, but she had little cash on hand. She always found security in saving.

She wandered the showroom a while longer and finally chose a Porsche Panamera that was available immediately.

“Perfect!” The salesperson beamed. It was rare to see such a decisive client, though not surprising. Wealthy people liked

to follow their impulses.

He barely held back a grin as he guided her through the payment process. He even tried to arrange a flashy car–pickup

ceremony, but Sydney waved it off. “No need. Can I just drive it out now?”

“Absolutely! My colleague already pulled it around to the front lot. I’ll take you there.” The salesperson practically

groveled. Rich and drama–free clients like her were perfect.

When Sydney took the keys, she smiled. “Thank you.”

This was the first major purchase she had made since the divorce. It felt special, like a reward for having the courage to

start fresh.

She was glad she hadn’t dragged her feet, stuck in a miserable marriage.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 58

Just as Sydney opened the car door, Penelope’s voice rang out from the front of the lot. “Syd, what a coincidence. Did

you somehow know Cal was giving me a car and come all this way just to see it?”

Sydney frowned and turned.

Penelope wasn’t alone. Caleb stood beside her in a sharp iron–gray three–piece suit. He looked poised and refined, but

the way he watched Sydney held a trace of scrutiny.

“What are you doing here?” he asked.

Sydney rarely lost her temper, but she was close now. Maybe she should’ve checked the almanac before leaving home.

Who would’ve thought picking up a car would make her look like a stalker?

Her slender fingers curled slightly as she tapped the hood. “Picking up a car. Isn’t it obvious?”

“Tired of the ones at home?” Caleb’s tone softened into its usual gentle cadence. “If you wanted something new, you should’ve told me. I could’ve had Gordon deliver it to the house.”

Gordon Hall was his assistant. For the past three years, most of the luxury bags and jewelry in her wardrobe had come

from Gordon–always timed for birthdays or anniversaries.

More often than not, Gordon had probably picked them out too. In some ways, he had felt more like her husband than

Caleb ever did.

And Caleb? He was Penelope’s husband.

The sales director hurried out to greet them, full of flattery. “Mr. Hampton, you’re here!”

He turned to Penelope with a bright smile. “Mrs. Hampton, your car is in the showroom. The pickup ceremony is ready, just as Mr. Hampton requested. You’re going to love it!”

‘Mrs. Hampton…‘ Sydney turned quietly and got into her car.

“Sydney.” Caleb stepped forward and grabbed the door, stopping her. “They misunderstood my relationship with

Penny. Don’t overthink it.”

Sometimes, Sydney couldn’t understand Caleb at all. How could someone be this hypocritical? Or maybe it was just part of being a man. He was the one who couldn’t let go of Penelope. The one always showing up with her. But in front of Sydney, he still wouldn’t admit it.

Did he think she was some obedient little fool? Someone easy to lie to and easier to appease? Why else would he think

“Cal, you don’t owe me an explanation. You owe them one,” she said coolly and tipped her chin toward the cluster of gawking sales staff. “They’re the ones who misunderstood your relationship with your sister–in–law. Not me.”

“Sydney…” His voice stayed gentle, coaxing. “If I explain now, they’ll see Penny differently. It’s not worth it, okay?”

“Okay. Let’s not.” Her voice was flat. She tugged at the car door he still held. “Can you let go now? Go keep your sister-

in–law company. Don’t keep her waiting.”

The showroom’s limited–edition sports car and the cascade of 999 Floyd roses–everything was finally being claimed

by the woman it had all been arranged for.

Sydney didn’t need to ask. She already knew who had planned it.

Caleb’s gaze lingered on her face, as if trying to read whether her smile was real or not. “So, I should go?”

“Of course.”

They were divorced. Whether he stayed or left, what difference did it make?

Still, even though her tone was light and her expression calm as always, Caleb felt something was off.

He had always liked how obedient she was. But now she was being too obedient, calm, and ready to let him go.

Suddenly, it didn’t feel right. His chest tightened like a sponge soaked through.

Without thinking, he said, “I’m not going. I’ll take you home first.”

Not only did Penelope look stunned, but Sydney froze as well. She raised her head and forced herself to speak in a calm tone. “Either explain things to them properly first, or just go with Penelope to pick up the car.”

She could accept that he had cheated. She could even accept being the one to explain it all. What she couldn’t accept was being dragged into a mess she never agreed to.

If he just left with her like this, everyone would assume Penelope was Mrs. Hampton. And her? The homewrecker. The

other woman. The mistress.

Caleb called out, “Sydney-”

Sydney had seen his hesitation, and that decided it for her. Her voice wasn’t loud, just clear enough for everyone nearby

to hear. “Mr. Hampton, I have other things to do. I’ll be going now.”

That one “Mr. Hampton” drew a sharp, cold line between them.

The sales director, a seasoned professional, caught on quickly and turned to Caleb with a smooth smile. “Ah, Mr. Hampton, so this young lady is a friend of yours? If you’d mentioned it earlier, I would’ve offered her a discount right

away.”

Caleb hummed absentmindedly.

At that moment, Sydney shut the car door and drove off without looking back.

Penelope, still smiling, slipped her arm through Caleb’s. “I almost thought you forgot–you promised to take me

shopping in Brimcrest City after we picked up the car.”

At the mention of it, Caleb finally looked away from where Sydney had disappeared. “I didn’t forget.”

His voice had lost its warmth, and Penelope noticed it. She tugged on his arm and pouted playfully. “That’s where we

first met. Why are you so distracted today?”

At a red light, just as Sydney tapped the brake, a WhatsApp message from Caleb appeared. She didn’t even open it.

A phone call came through at the same time, and she answered that instead.

“Alan?”

Alan’s warm voice came through. “Syd, there’s something I wanted your opinion on.”

“You remember when Julian came to our place?” Alan spoke too quickly and got a smack on the shoulder from Eliana

beside him.

He cleared his throat and went on, “He’s working on a new cancer treatment project. He needs a team of medical experts. I was planning to have Marc lead a team over. I didn’t mention it to you because I thought you’d want to stay out of anything involving Julian, but Eliana insisted we ask you first.”

The light turned green.

Sydney pressed the gas and answered without hesitation, “Alan, I’d love to join.”

She had gone into medicine for a simple reason–to save lives. Millions of patients were out there. Even if she worked at

the clinic every day, the number of people she could help would still be limited.

Now, she had a chance to help cancer patients.

Sterling Corp. owned some of the most advanced labs in the country. Their research institute attracted top–tier talent.

Working with them professionally was an obvious choice.

And personally? She wouldn’t let private matters get in the way of something that meaningful.

Alan sounded surprised. “You’re sure? Once you join, you’ll probably be visiting Sterling Corp. a lot. You’re bound to run

into Julian.”

“I’ve already thought it through,” Sydney said with a light laugh. “Don’t worry. Sterling Corp. is huge. What are the odds

I’d run into him every single time?”

“That’s true. And this is a good project. I’m glad you’re thinking clearly.” Alan sounded relieved, already planning ahead

for her. “If this drug is developed successfully, your name won’t stay under the radar for long. And once that happens,

even if Eloise wants to interfere again, it’ll be too late.”

Once Sydney became a key figure in cancer drug development, even Eloise would have to think twice before crossing her

again.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 60

Chapter 60

Sydney did not overthink it. “Only if the drug succeeds.”

Alan understood her strength better than anyone. “Given your abilities, I believe it will.”

After hanging up, he looked at his wife with pride. “I never expected you to understand this girl’s nature better than I

do.”

Eliana smiled. “Of course. She would turn down most proposals. But when it comes to saving lives, she never hesitates.”

Brimcrest lay less than 125 miles from Jouleston. Since Caleb had a shareholders‘ meeting the next morning, they did

not stay overnight. He and Penelope drove back through the night.

At that hour, Jouleston’s streets still swarmed with traffic. A red limited–edition 911 roared through a red light,

prompting passersby to whip out their phones and snap pictures. This only fueled Penelope’s vanity.

“Cal, I’m so happy today. Thank you.” She leaned toward the passenger seat and noticed he seemed lost in thought.

A few seconds passed before Caleb turned to her. “What did you say?”

“You zoned out again!” Penelope teased lightly, but unease stirred in her chest.

That afternoon, he had taken her back to Brimcrest as promised, but he had kept checking his phone and drifting into

thought.

Caleb rubbed his brow, looking tired. “It’s late. I’m just a bit worn out.”

“Are you really just tired, or is your mind somewhere else?” Penelope’s voice cracked.

‘On that bitch, Sydney, probably,‘ she added inwardly.

Caleb would never admit it. Still, he forced himself to confront his feelings for Sydney. Despite his effort, the mood sank

deeper.

When the car pulled into Viridian Garden, he did not wait. He strode inside with clear urgency. He knocked lightly on the

master bedroom door but received no response. He turned the handle and entered.

The lights were off, leaving the room near–dark. He tiptoed to the bed and sat.

“Sydney, today—” His voice faltered when he saw the bed. It was perfectly made, smooth and eerie in its untouched condition. Sydney was not home.

Her skincare products were neatly arranged on the vanity. The wardrobe remained intact. Yet something felt wrong. His eyes flicked to the bookcases–only a handful of books remained.

Caleb frowned. That bookshelf had once been crammed full.

Penelope hurried in, feigning concern. “What’s wrong, Cal? Didn’t she come home yet?”

“No.” His voice sounded stunned.

She sighed with relief, cursing inwardly, ‘That bitch.‘

Moving out would have been enough. But she had emptied the entire walk–in closet, afraid Caleb might not notice.

Fortunately, Penelope had prepared. She had already moved many of her own clothes into Sydney’s now–empty closet

Just as she thought she had gotten away with it, Caleb’s brow furrowed again. He turned and headed downstairs with

purpose.

Nancy was fast asleep when a sudden pounding on the door jolted her awake. She opened it to find Caleb standing there, his expression stormy Her body tensed.

“Mr. Hampton, is something wrong?” she asked.

Caleb’s gaze sharpened. “When was the last time sydney came home?”

A few steps away, Penelope clenched her fists, and her nails dug into her palms. That wretched woman had finally moved out, and she had just started enjoying her place as the lady of the house. She had no interest in seeing Sydney retur.-

“Ms. Wilson comes home every day.” Nancy blinked, feigning confusion, then quickly corrected herself. “Oh, wait. Not tonight. Madam Sterling’s birthday is coming up. She called Ms. Wilson back to help with the planning.”

Penelope’s eyes narrowed, suspicion creeping in. Why was Nancy covering for Sydney? Could it be that even Nancy believed she was better suited for the role Sydney had abandoned?

The thought made her smirk. She turned to Caleb “Come on, it’s just one night. Why are you overreacting?”

“Is that so?” Caleb faltered, doubt flickering across his face.

After their marriage, he’d used work as an excuse to avoid the bedroom they were supposed to share. They had been sleeping separately, and he rarely stepped into the master bedroom. He hadn’t paid close attention.

Penelope yawned. “Nancy’s always been detail–oriented. If she says so, just take her word for it. Don’t you trust her?”

“I do,” Caleb said with a nod.

Nancy had worked for the Hampton family for years. She had no reason to lie for Sydney. Besides, Sydney wouldn’t move out without saying a word. She always made a scene when she was upset, waiting to be coaxed.

Still, she had looked bothered at the dealership yesterday. Maybe he should patch things up,

The next day at Lumosa Clinic, Sydney pulled into the parking lot. As she stepped out of the car, a flashy red 911 screeched past and wedged into a tight space, drawing a small crowd.

“Holy crap, that thing must’ve cost a fortune.”

“I don’t know how much, but I do know we could go hungry for the rest of our lives and still never afford one.”

“Ah, the magic of being born into the right family.”

Sydney said nothing. She glanced at the car and turned toward the building.

“Sydney.” Behind her, Penelope stepped out of the red car and caught up quickly. “We’re colleagues now. No need to act so cold, right?”

A few coworkers nearby gawked.

That car? And they were going to work alongside someone like her?

Sydney lifted her chin slightly and said coolly, “Looking to hear more unpleasant things today?”

Penelope froze, the words catching in her throat. She still remembered what Sydney had said at the clinic–calling her a mistress and declaring herself the real wife. The humiliation still

stung.

Afraid Sydney might shame her again, she swallowed her response. It was fine. She could wait. One way or another, she’d take her down.

Without another word, Sydney turned and walked inside. Her schedule was packed from morning to evening. There would be no breaks.

At the clinic, she shrugged off her wool coat, hung it up, and slipped into her white one. She was always early and rarely kept her patients waiting. They appreciated that.

During lunch break, Sydney had no interest in the canteen. She sat scrolling through delivery apps when a knock sounded at her door. She looked up.

Marcus stepped in with a thermal container. He shut the door and gave her a long look. “You okay? I heard Penelope gave you a hard time this morning.”

Sydney smiled. “Are you sure that’s what you heard?”

Marcus noticed Sydney’s calm expression and chuckled. “They say it’s rare to see Dr. Wilson so cold. People think you might have some issue with Penelope.”

Sydney said nothing. Her eyes were fixed on the thermal container Marcus had brought.

“For me?” she asked softly.

“Yeah.” He set the container down before her. “Beef, eggplant, and cabbage. Eliana asked me to bring these especially for you.”

Sydney lifted the lid and inhaled the rich aroma deeply. She tasted the eggplant and smiled warmly. “You went to see Eliana?”

“Yeah, we talked about that Sterling Corp. project.” Marcus sat across from her. “How’s the food?”

“Great, of course.” She returned his smile. “Have you tried any?”

He hesitated, his clear eyes lingering on her face. “Not yet.”

“Then let’s eat together.” Sydney pulled out a pair of disposable utensils and handed them to him. “So, what’s the update on the Sterling Corp. project? When does it start?”

1

“First, let’s eat.” He glanced at the time and added softly, “We’ll talk after you finish work tonight. Oh, by the way, Ryan Morales just accepted Penelope as a mentee.”

Sydney paused mid–bite but showed no surprise. Caleb always planned carefully for Penelope. Besides Alan, Ryan was the other authority in the clinic.

She nodded. “With him overseeing things, there shouldn’t be any major slip–ups.”

Just before clocking out after acupuncture on her last patient, Sydney’s phone buzzed. It was a message from Caleb.

Caleb: [Syd, I’m coming to pick you up.]

Her brow tightened as she considered refusing. Before she could think of a reason, a nurse suddenly shouted, “Dr. Wilson! A patient just fainted!”

Sydney’s reflexes kicked in. She dropped her phone into her pocket and rushed over.

After checking the patient’s pulse and complexion, she commanded, “Get me a three–edged needle!”

A nurse hurried over with the instrument. Sydney inserted it precisely, gently bleeding the patient until he

stirred.

From the watching crowd, someone shouted excitedly, He’s awake! He’s awake!”

“Bring a stretcher, and don’t let him move on his own.” Sydney kept working and instructed a nurse to steady the newly conscious patient. “You nearly had a stoke. Do not move.”

The spectators murmured in admiration. “Dr. Wilson’s kill is impeccable.”

Another patient said proudly, “She cured my chronic illess years ago!”

Far off, Penelope’s expression darkened. She had been praised as naturally gifted in college.. So why was Sydney, younger still, receiving all the praise at the clini?

Before leaving, Sydney calmly gave post–treatment instructions. “Take your medicine twice a day, Come for acupuncture every day. Don’t skip. Any slip–up now could lead to serious consequences.”

The patient spoke gratefully. “Understood. Thank you, r. Wilson.”

Sydney changed out of her coat and saw the familiar Maybach parked outside. Then she remembered she had not replied to Caleb’s message.

Before she could act, he stepped out and began walking toward her. She had seen this scene before at family events. When Caleb was short on time, he would sometimes pick her up on his way home. But he never used to get out of the car; he usually waited inside.

Still, she had always sensed something in the gesture. She used to hope for a sweet, loving husband–and-

wife bond.

“Caleb!” Penelope suddenly jogged toward him and stood before him, posing sweetly. “Look at you. You remembered to come pick me up after work!”

Sydney hadn’t expected Caleb to pick her up after work. Still, watching the scene unfold, she couldn’t help feeling a touch of irony.
Caleb gently moved Penelope aside, about to speak, when a few sharp–eyed coworkers called out with a laugh, “Hey, Penny, this must be your boyfriend, right?
Earlier that day, Penelope had spent hours subtly bragging about her tall, handsome, gentle, and wealthy boyfriend. That expensive car from the morning? It was clearly a gift from him. And now here he was–real, refined, and effortlessly elegant.
She nervously tucked her hair behind her ear and glanced at Caleb. “Cal, these are my coworkers.”
Caleb frowned faintly. When he looked again, Sydney had already turned away.
He didn’t respond, so everyone assumed he was simply reserved. For a rich, powerful man, ignoring small talk felt perfectly in character.
Once Penelope and Caleb got into the car, her coworkers erupted in envy.
“Oh my god, how lucky can you get? Rich, handsome, and picks her up from work?”
“Help me! I’d trade 10 years of my life for a boyfriend like that.”

“I’d trade 12!”
“Girl, you’re insane.”
But then again, life was about quality, not quantity. Even a single day of living that ultra–rich dream— driving a limited–edition sports car to work–would be unforgettable.

She drew a quiet breath. ‘Right. We still had to talk about Sterling Corp.’s project.‘
She gave him a small smile. “What kind of food?”
He sent a location to her phone. “New place nearby. Head it’s good.”
“Sure.” Sydney set the GPS and drove off.
Behind them, the black Maybach remained parked. The linic’s lot required circling to exit, and from that vantage point, Caleb watched Marcus get into her car with practiced ease. Through the windshield, he saw Marcus‘ bright and warm smile.
‘So she doesn’t smile only for me…‘ he thought.
Penelope caught the flash of displeasure in Caleb’s eyes and seized the moment. “That’s Marcus, the future successor of Shepard Pharmaceuticals. He owns the clinic. He and Sydney are close. They spend time together outside work.”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 64

Chapter 64

Marcus glanced at Sydney cautiously. “We’ll probably need to make frequent trips to Sterling Corp. when

the time comes.”

Sterling Corp. had two office towers housing labs and research institutes. The chances of running into Julian were slim, but not zero.

Sydney smiled helplessly. “Why do you sound just like Alan?”

She set down her utensils and said earnestly, “Marc, don’t worry. I know where to draw the line. Personal issues won’t interfere with work.”

Upstairs on the restaurant’s second floor, the door to a private room stood ajar. A tall man leaned casually on the railing outside, his long fingers draped over the edge. His sharp black eyes were fixed on the pair below.

The aloof and proper woman who always kept him at arm’s length now sat obediently. She was smiling sweetly as she spoke to another man and made promises Julian could not hear.

“Julian, what are you staring at? Are you coming in or not?” A man his age stepped out of the room and followed his gaze.

Grinning like a fool, he joked, “Oh, I see. Watching your little sister, huh?”

“Screw off.” Julian shot him a cold look, stuffed his hands in his pockets, and walked downstairs without another word. “You handle the rest of the meeting. I’m heading out.”

“Got it. I’ll just tell them you had urgent business,” the man said, clearly used to this.

He glanced at the man sitting across from Sydney and shook his head with a touch of pity. “Tsk. Some people are really fearless and fall for anyone they lay eyes on.‘

Sydney had just managed to ease Marcus‘ concerns when Julian approached with a dark expression. She stiffened, not expecting to run into him here. Instinctively, she turned her head to pretend she didn’t notice.

Unfortunately, it was too late. Julian had already stood beside the table

Marcus smiled and stood. “Mr. Sterling. What a coincidence. You’re here for dinner as well?”

Julian gave a polite nod. “Right.”

Right? What was that supposed to mean?

Marcus paused, then offered courteously, “Did you come to meet someone? You’re welcome to join us if you’re free”

“Sure,” Julian cut him off cleanly and furned to Sydney

Sydney had just assured Marcus she could keep things

She drew a slow breath and treated Juliau like a high–a and gave him space.

Even seated, Julian’s tall frame radiated pressure. The font scent of agarwood lingered in the air.

Marcus, surprised but composed, waved a waiter over with a smile. “Mr. Sterling, would you like to order something?”

Julian glanced at the dishes–mushrooms, barbecue ribs, stuffed eggplants, tuna tartar–and set the menu aside. “No need. These are some of my favorites, too.”

The word “too” lingered in Sydney’s ears, subtle but meaningful. Her palate, shaped over nearly nine years, had ended up remarkably similar to Julian’s.

The rest of the dinner felt like torture. She barely finished her orange juice before Marcus laughed. “This was a bit impromptu. Next time, I’ll properly treat you, Mr. Sterling.”

“This was fine,” Julian said indifferently, that usual air of detached authority never slipping.

Sydney no longer cared. That line clearly meant the meal was over. She stood as Marcus did. “Marc, I’ll drive you home.”

“Mr. Shepard, my driver’s just out front. Let him take you,” Julian cut in.

Then he turned to Sydney, smirked, and said, “I’ve got something to discuss with my little sister.”

‘Little sister… Has he lost his mind?‘ Sydney wondered.

The second Marcus was around, it was “little sister” every other sentence.

Chapter 65

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 65

Since Julian had gone out of his way to hide it from Marcus, this had to be personal.

Sydney frowned, and her earlier politeness was gone. “Mr. Sterling, I don’t recall there being anything between us that requires a private conversation.”

Julian gave her a sideways glance, his tone cool. “Bruce asked me to return something to you. Don’t you want it?”

“Fine.” Sydney didn’t argue and turned to Marcus. “Marc, go on ahead.”

Marcus hesitated. But since the two of them were supposed to be “siblings,” he figured Julian wouldn’t cross a line. He left first.

As soon as he was gone, Sydney reached out her hand. “What is it?”

Julian didn’t answer. He slipped a hand into his pocket and walked off toward the exit.

Sydney couldn’t think of anything she had left with Bruce, but she had no choice except to follow.

Julian somehow recognized her car. He stopped in front of it and pulled the handle. When it didn’t open, he looked back at her.

“You need me in the car just to return something?” she questioned.

“My car was used to take Marc home. You’re not giving me a ride?” he shot back.

Sydney thought, ‘I never asked you to drive him.‘

Still, she couldn’t forget how he had helped her out at the Sterling estate a few days ago. She sighed and unlocked the door.

Julian slid into the passenger seat calmly and handed her a charm. His voice was low and unreadable. “You think this thing’ll make Caleb come crawling back?”

Sydney recognized it instantly. It was the protective charm that Agatha had given her. She snatched it and shoved it into her purse. Her tone turned cold. “Not your business.”

She didn’t say anything about this. Instead, she asked, “Where am I dropping you?”

Julian didn’t flinch. “Aurum Road.”

Sydney blinked. “Aurum Road?”

He glanced at her. “I live there. Problem?”

She hadn’t expected the coincidence. “No problem.”

The rest of the drive passed in silence.

When they reached Aurum Road, Sydney asked, “Which complex?”

There was no answer.

She turned her head and saw Julian had dozed off. His long lashes cast soft shadows over his sharp cheekbones. His features were striking, even in sleep.

“Julian…” She opened her mouth, hesitated, then let it go. Instead, she pulled out her phone and removed Elliot from her block list. Then she texted him for the address.

The moment Elliot saw her message, he nearly fell out of his chair. He replied right away.

Elliot: [Ms. Wilson, it’s at Deltan Mansion.]

Deltan Mansion stood just down the road from her neighborhood. It ranked among the most exclusive properties in Jouleston, and the entire access road had been privately purchased. No one truly knew who lived behind those gates.

She had never expected Julian to be the owner.

Thanks to Elliot’s heads–up, the security barrier lifted as her car approached. She turned onto the lakeside

road and eased forward.

Deep winter had frozen the lake on both sides into delicate sheets of ice. Simply looking at them sent a chill through her. Yet somehow, she felt strangely calm.

“We’re here?”

Before she could figure out why, Julian’s low, hoarse voice broke the quiet. It lacked its usual sharpness.

Night had fallen. The car was quiet and dim. The moment reminded her of the past–those nights when he used to pick her up from Alan’s house without a word of complaint.

Back then, she had been the one asleep in the passenger seat. Julian would never wake her. He would carry her inside and put her straight to bed so that she could sleep through the night.

The tires slipped slightly on an icy patch. The jolt snapped her back to the present.

Sydney pressed her lips together. “Yeah. We’re here.”

Julian didn’t seem to notice the change in her mood. “I Heard from Alan that you’re joining the project?”

“Yeah.”

The car rolled to a gentle stop in front of the mansion.

Sydney looked at him. Her eyes softened, but a trace of hesitation lingered. “Can we?

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 66

Julian asked, “Would you refuse to join the project just because I said no?”

Sydney wasn’t sure what he meant. Since it was his project, she did not want to upset him. “It’s under your name, so of course I’ll respect your decision.”

After marrying Caleb, they had grown so distant that they were practically strangers.

A moment of silence passed before Julian let out a low, almost mocking chuckle. His gaze turned icy. “Then don’t bother coming.”

He pushed open the door and strode out without looking back.

Sydney sat stunned. She had no idea what she had said to anger him. He had flipped on her so quickly.

‘Fine. If he doesn’t want me on the project, I won’t join.”

Still, bitterness lingered.

That night, she dreamed she was pestering him, whining, “Julian, if you don’t let me join, I’ll never talk to you again!”

He raised an eyebrow, his eyes sharp and teasing. “What did you just call me?”

“I was wrong, Jules!”

Sydney jolted awake, heart pounding, and she stared at the dark ceiling. It took her a long time to calm down. They were nothing to each other now. She would not act like a clingy child again.

She turned on the light, went to the living room, and dug through her bag to find the protective charm. Back in her room, she started slipping it under her pillow, then suddenly froze.

Something was off. The charm was not quite the same as before.

The next day at the clinic…

Penelope suddenly became the center of attention. Even in the cafeteria, a crowd of young female coworkers

surrounded her.

As Sydney passed with her lunch tray, one of them cheerfully patted the empty seat beside her. “Dr. Wilson, come sit with us!”

“Thanks.” Sydney accepted politely, quietly ate her meal, and ignored their gossipy chatter.

Penelope pulled out a box of cherries. “These just flew in from overseas today. Can someone help me wash them so we can all share?”

The young women oohed and aahed, eyeing the glossy, golden–red cherries.

“Wow, thank you!”

“Penny, you must be loaded!”

“How’d you land a rich, perfect boyfriend like that?”

Penelope acted shy under their bombardment. “We actually knew each other since we were kids. He was the one who pursued me.”

The young women gushed.

“Oh my god!”

“So it’s childhood sweethearts and he made the first move? That’s like a total fairytale!”

“Ugh, this is rich girl meets heir–level romance. We can’t compete with that.”

“Penny, when are you two getting married? Let us bask in the good vibes!”

Penelope smiled coyly. “Soon, I think. There’s just a tiny obstacle, but once that’s settled, I’ll definitely invite you all.”

“Yay, we can’t wait!”

Penelope turned to Sydney with a bright smile. “Dr. Wilson, you have to come to our wedding.”

Sydney calmly dabbed her mouth, glanced at her coolly, and smiled. “Midday really is the perfect time for daydreams.”

She stood up and walked off, tray in hand.

Penelope had not expected such shamelessness. She had practically spelled it all out, and Sydney still clung to that “Mrs. Hampton” title like it meant something. On top of that, she dared to insult her in front of everyone?

Penelope took a deep breath, forcing down her anger. Then she heard one of the young women whisper, ” Don’t mind her, Penny. Dr. Wilson just got divorced. Maybe she’s not in the mood for wedding talk.”

Penelope’s eyes widened. “Divorced?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 67

The young woman had overheard Sydney and Agatha’s conversation last time and lowered her voice. “Yeah. But I don’t think she wants too many people to know. I only found out by accident. Don’t tell anyone else, okay?”

“Of course.” Penelope patted her shoulder and stood up eagerly. “I’m full. You girls take your time.”

The moment she stepped out of the cafeteria, she dialed Caleb, her eyes shining. “Cal! I just heard something and wasn’t sure if I should tell you. But then figured I shouldn’t keep it from you.”

Caleb was in a meeting.

“What is it?” His voice was calm and steady.

“I think Sydney and Marcus might be more than just friends,” Penelope said.

Caleb’s brows twitched, and he was about to reply when she added, “I overheard her telling people at the clinic that she’s already divorced. Everyone there knows about it. I was shocked when I heard that as well.”

Caleb shot up from his seat and walked out of the conference room. “What did you just say?”

-Penelope’s voice turned cautious. “Cal, she might’ve cheated on you.”

Meanwhile, the supposedly unfaithful Sydney was driving toward the Hampton residence.

Early that morning, Adeline had called, asking her to come by to formalize the terms they had agreed on- signing paperwork and all.

Sydney had no objections. She had taken the houses and the money. Signing a contract would not be a problem.

After lunch, she grabbed her bag and left the clinic.

The Hampton residence was especially quiet at this hou Dorothy often napped in the afternoon, and her sleep was light. The staff moved with hushed steps, careful not to disturb her.

Sydney was led straight to a room by the butler. Thanks to the outrageous demands Sydney had made last time, Adeline’s demeanor was noticeably colder.

She slid the prepared agreement toward Sydney. “Sign it”

Sydney turned to the first page, her fingers gliding over the smooth paper. She got straight to the point. ” When will the divorce papers be ready?”

“So eager, are you?” Adeline stared at her as if seeing he clearly for the first time. “Did we ever mistreat you after you married into our family, Sydney? Think about it. Did the Hampton family ever wrong you?”

That line felt familiar. It took Sydney a moment, then she remembered it was exactly what Eloise had said last time at the Sterling estate.

Everyone always stood tall and righteous, questioning her as if she owed them something.

But what about her? Had she wronged anyone?

Still, she refused to engage in a back–and–forth debate about fairness. She said flatly, without emotion, ” Mrs. Hampton, dragging out the divorce doesn’t affect me. But it might delay your search for Caleb’s next wife. What decent family would let their daughter date a married man?”

That hit its mark.

Adeline’s expression softened slightly. “Don’t worry. I want that certificate finalized more than you do. At the latest, around Mom’s 80th birthday.”

‘So, in about four days.‘

Sydney didn’t ask any more questions. Her finger landed on a specific clause in the contract.

“I won’t sign if this part isn’t changed,” Sydney said.

The clause read: [Before obtaining Adeline Mayer’s permission, Sydney Wilson is not allowed to tell Caleb Hampton about the divorce.]

That part was fine. But the second half said: [If Caleb Hampton finds out about the divorce beforehand, it will count as a breach of contract on Sydney Wilson’s part, with a penalty of 7 million dollars.]

Before Adeline could erupt, Sydney began calmly.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 68

Sydney spoke evenly. “I promise I won’t tell Caleb myself. But if he guesses or hears it from someone else, I can’t control that.”

Adeline had no intention of changing the clause. “If you lon’t tell him, and I don’t tell him, who else could he hear it from? Sydney, the Hampton family’s money doesn’t grow on—”

Her sentence broke off when Sydney’s phone suddenly rang. Caleb’s name flashed on the caller ID.

Sydney answered immediately.

Caleb’s steady voice came through. “Sydney, why are people saying we’ve already divorced?”

She stayed where she was, letting Adeline hear every word.

Adeline’s expression darkened, and she silently warned her to keep quiet.

Sydney’s voice stayed calm, free of guilt. “Who’s spreading that? I can’t get divorced on my own, can I?”

“Where are you?”

“At the Hampton residence, having tea with your mother,” she said sweetly.

That eased him. He checked the time. “I’ll swing by and pick you up once I’m done here.”

“Okay,” Sydney agreed without hesitation.

After hanging up, she turned to Adeline with a pointed look. “See? I didn’t say anything.”

Adeline inhaled sharply and called the butler to summon the lawyer for an immediate clause revision. Once the contract was signed, Dorothy’s voice echoed from the living room.

Adeline quickly reminded her, “Grandma’s blood pressure has been unstable. I haven’t told her about the divorce yet. Don’t let anything slip.”

Sydney nodded and went out to keep Dorothy company over tea.

Dorothy had always liked her. She held Sydney’s hand and chatted endlessly.

After a while, Sydney took her pulse and offered gentle advice. “Grandma, with your underlying conditions, you really need to watch what you eat. Go easy on oily and rich foods.”

Dorothy feigned annoyance playfully. “Oh, now you’re talking just like Adeline! Stop nagging your grandma!

A voice came from the entrance, “Grandma.”

Caleb stepped inside, his tone warm and respectful “Sydney’s just worried about your health.”

Caleb stood tall and graceful, dressed in a charcoal gray suit that made him look every bit the refined gentleman. His sharp, handsome features made people

use

For a moment, Sydney felt caught off guard. It was hard to reconcile this version of Caleb with the man emotionally entangled with her sister–in–law. The contrast felt jarring.

Dorothy was not in the mood to listen to their fussing After a short while, she waved them off.

Outside the Hampton residence, Sydney’s expression grew distant. She did not want to return to Viridian

Garden.

As she unlocked the car and prepared an excuse to slip away, Caleb opened the passenger door, slid in, and said in his familiar gentle tone, “Sydney, we need to talk”

Sydney guessed what this was about. She looked at him calmly, her eyes docile. “Talk about what?”

“Syd, sometimes you really need to be mindful about how close you get to other men,” he said.

“Hmm?”

“Your relationship with Marcus has stirred a lot of gossip at the clinic, hasn’t it?” he questioned.

Sydney blinked, stunned. She had expected this to be about the divorce, not Marcus.

She and Marcus barely interacted outside work before the Storia business trip. They had almost no private contact. The clinic wasn’t exactly full of gossipers.

‘Oh, right. Penelope is part of the clinic now,‘ she thought.

Caleb looked at her like she was a clueless child, adopting a concerned husband tone. “Syd, you’re a married woman. As my wife, I don’t ask much from you. Just steer clear of rumors and whispers. Okay?”

Sydney watched Caleb’s entitled demeanor and couldn’t help but chuckle. How had she never noticed his hypocrisy before?

With only four days until the divorce was final, she lacked the energy to argue. She switched to “deal with the Sterling family” mode, polite but distant, and said earnestly, “Yes, don’t overthink it. Marcus and I are nothing more than friends.”

It was a line from a well–rehearsed script. She had learned it well.

Caleb’s eyes softened. He ruffled her hair gently, cooing like a parent, “I trust you, of course.”

For years, that had been his way to comfort her. When she had meltdowns with Julian and no one else defended her, Caleb always stepped in.

She was still figuring out how to escape politely as she started the car. Before she could think further, her phone rang. Marcus‘ name appeared on the screen. The call connected through the car’s Bluetooth.

“Syd, dinner at the usual place. Can you make it by seven?”

Relief washed over her. She agreed immediately. “Yes, I’ll be there.”

Hearing her quick response, Marcus teased warmly, “You can bring someone, too. Tiffany’s off tonight. If she’s free, bring her along.”

Just then, Caleb spoke softly. “Mr. Shepard, I’ll go with her.”

Marcus, familiar with Caleb, caught the cool formality in his tone but replied with hospitality, “Of course you’re welcome.”

Sydney quietly asked Caleb, “Are you sure you want to go?”

“Can’t I?” A faint frown crossed Caleb’s face. “Worried you’ll feel uncomfortable with your senior around?”

Men understood men. Marcus‘ look at her earlier in the parking lot had never been innocent.

Sydney played naive and hopeful, masking her chill with a smirk. “I’m just worried about you.”

Caleb shrugged. “What would bother me?”

She dropped the subject and drove straight to the dinner

Even Penelope froze. She had called earlier to check Caleb’s availability. He said he wasn’t tree. Yet here he

was.

Caleb’s brow furrowed as he watched Sydney enter. “Why didn’t you say this was dinner with your coworkers?”

Sydney kept her expression calm. “Since Marcus and I are nothing, yes, this is just a group dinner with my colleagues.”

Sydney nodded and took her seat. Only then did she notice a deep red pressure mark on her palm.

Curiosity rippled around the table.

“Dr. Wilson, how come we’ve never seen your ex–husband? What’s he like?”

Sydney steadied herself. With a cool, distant tone, she replied, “He cheated on me.”

She ignored the sharp looks aimed at her and added clearly, “He cheated long ago.

Even if it was just emotional, it still counted as cheating!

“What?”

The older doctors, usually too reserved for these gatherings, kept their distance. At every dinner, only the younger ones attended. They were at that age when they hated anything unfair.

Some younger nurses who looked up to Penelope grew worked up and began cursing. They tore into the ex- husband they had never met and the so–called mistress, insulting them with no hint of subtlety.

Penelope was furious and tried to interject. “Dr. Wilson, this is only one side of the story. Who knows why your husband really cheate-”

Someone cut her off harshly, “Don’t speak up for trash like that. What good can a scumbag and a homewrecker possibly be?”

Throughout the meal, Sydney ate quietly. She was emotionally calm and at ease.

Caleb’s expression remained icy. He was born with a silver spoon and running the massive Hampton Corp. from a young age, yet he had never been publicly insulted like this.

Tonight, especially, he could not respond. Sydney had warned him the gathering would make him uncomfortable. He had chosen not to believe it.

At the end of dinner, Sydney excused herself to the restroom.

Outside, she heard the murmurs fade.

“Dr. Wilson is so talented. I can’t believe her marriage was such a disaster.”

“So what? She’ll find someone better.”

“Better? Better than Penelope’s guy? The CEO of Hampton Corp!”

“You’re out of touch with the financial news. Caleb’s nothing. That Sterling guy is the real deal.”

“Even if he is, he’s not reachable for ordinary people like us.”

Sydney waited until the voices faded completely, then stepped out.

“The Sterling guy…‘ Everyone in Jouleston knew who that meant.

She had not expected to run right into him after washing her hands.

Julian leaned against the restroom doorway. He was wearing a satin black shirt and was holding a half- smoked cigarette between his fingers.

His eyes flicked up at her. “Have you been secretly training ninja skills these past few years, Sydney?”

He never said kind things. She knew that.

!

She guessed why he was there he had almost certainly spotted Caleb with Penelope again tonight.

She looked down, wiping her hands. “If I’ve been training, that’s my business. Not yours.”

She tossed the tissue into the bin and walked past him.

His cold voice followed her. “I don’t want to be embarrassed. That’s at least my business.”

They had severed ties long ago, but most people didn’t know.

Most saw what Caleb saw. They were all under the impression that it was just a temporary quarrel. If things were cleared up, Sydney would still be Julian’s treasured little sister.

Sydney knew the subtext and spoke plainly, “You can tell everyone we don’t have anything to do with each other anymore.”

That would be the simplest solution. But Julian, blunt and impatient, replied, “That’s too much effort.”

Sydney turned to him and asked, “What do you want me to do?”

“Divorce him,” he answered flatly.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 71

Chapter 71

Those two words–Divorce him–coming from Julian’s mouth didn’t surprise Sydney in the least. He had said the same thing years ago, back when she insisted on marrying Caleb.

Julian had always lived in a world above the clouds, unable to understand that, for someone like her, marrying Caleb had once been the best outcome she could hope for. He had no idea that divorce wasn’t some casual, throwaway decision.

If Caleb wanted to leave and she resisted, he would still find a way. Whether through tactics, pressure, or even signing the papers behind her back, he had all the means.

But her? If the Hampton family refused and Caleb didn’t agree, she would be trapped in that marriage for life.

Years in the Sterling family had taught Sydney just how powerless ordinary people were in the face of real

influence.

She didn’t bother explaining. Instead, she smiled faintly her dimples showing as she answered gently, “But I don’t want to let go of him.”

The same old lovesick act.

Julian’s face darkened at once. His voice came through gritted teeth. “Sydney, have I ever abused you?”

He didn’t wait for an answer. He stubbed out his cigarette, turned on his heel, and walked off. Even his back radiated seething anger.

Walking away when things got heated had always been the most efficient way for her and Julian to

communicate.

Just then, Marcus appeared. “I thought you’d already left.”

“They’re all gone?”

“Yeah,” he said, hesitating. “Caleb too.”

“Okay.” Sydney gave a small nod and took her bag from him. “Let’s head out too.”

Since Marcus had been drinking, she offered to drive him home.

As they neared his place, he suddenly remembered something. “Right, about that Sterling Corp, project. We’re expected at a prep meeting tomorrow.”

Sydney’s grip on the wheel tightened.

“Sterling Corp. probably forgot to inform you,” she said quietly. “I won’t be participating.”

Especially not after tonight. After embarrassing Julian like that, he likely wouldn’t want to see her again.

Marcus frowned. “That’s impossible. The final participat list came in this evening. Your name’s on it.”

Sydney blinked, caught off guard. So either Julian wasn’t personally managing the project, or he simply didn’t care enough to remove her from it.

She let out a breath. “That’s great.”

Marcus smiled. “Even better–you’re leading the Medicine team.”

“Why me?” she asked, puzzled. That position should’ve gone to Marcus.

+15 BONUS

But he didn’t seem bothered. “Sterling Corp. assigned it. Besides, you’re more suited to it than I am. You’ve always had a better grasp of pharmaceutical R&D.”

The clinic’s best–selling in–house herbal formula had been her creation too. They’d credited Marcus with it to avoid drawing attention from the Sterling family.

Back on the road to Viridian Garden, Penelope was seething. After everything that had transpired tonight, her anger had nowhere to go. She shot a look at the silent man beside her. “See? I told you. Sydney’s not as innocent or naive as you think.”

Caleb didn’t respond. A pulse throbbed at his temple from the alcohol. Tonight’s dinner had crossed a line. He could indulge Sydney in many things, but not at the expense of his reputation. As the Hampton family’s daughter–in–law, she should’ve known how to uphold their image.

“When she gets home tonight, I’ll talk to her,” he said.

Penelope’s tone softened now that she had the reaction she wanted. “By the way, Cal… I heard from a colleague that Sydney and Marcus are working on some pharmaceutical R&D project. Could you pull some strings and get me in too?”

“Sure,” Caleb replied without hesitation. “You’ve always had a natural talent. It’s just a supporting role. I’ll call the Shepard family.”

Penelope leaned into his arm, giving him a half–hug. Her voice turned pouty. “Do you really think I’m talented? Because everyone only praises Sydney at the clinic.”

“She’s just been in the field longer than you.‘

Caleb remembered how Penelope had once been a rising star in her class, praised often by her professors.

“If we’re talking pure talent and capability, you’re still the better one,” he said.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 72

“What about Sydney? You think she’s just average?” Penelope asked.

Caleb didn’t know how to answer.

Since their marriage, he and Sydney had barely spent time together, let alone worked side by side. All he really knew was that she had been quietly working at the clinic for the past few years, never drawing much attention. If anyone there praised her; it would probably be because she was Marcus‘ junior.

Recalling the scene at the restaurant, Caleb didn’t wait for Sydney to return home. He called her directly.

She picked up almost immediately.

“What is it?” Her voice was calm and distant, enough to throw him off.

“Don’t you think you owe me an explanation for what happened at dinner tonight?”

“Explain what?” she asked with a soft, cool laugh. “Why I exposed the fact that my husband cheated on me? Or was it something else?”

She hadn’t expected him to have the nerve to call and question her.

Caleb frowned. Something felt different about her. The first few times she snapped at him, he’d assumed it was just anger. But this didn’t feel the same.

“I told you, Penny and I aren’t what you think. Are you really not going to stop until you drive her away?”

“Exactly,” Sydney said, dropping the last of her polite veneer. Her voice sharpened, every word colder and more precise. “I won’t stop until she’s gone. So? Has she left yet?”

She had swallowed that bitterness for too long. She had tried to let it go. All she wanted was the divorce. Nothing else mattered anymore.

What she hadn’t expected was for Caleb to turn it around, act like the victim, demand answers and question her. As if she were the one at fault.

“You’d better forget it!” he snapped.

This was the first time she’d truly gone toe–to–toe with him, and Caleb barely recognized the woman on the other end of the line. He was furious, but he reminded himself that she was still young.

Forcing down his anger, he softened his tone. “Sydney, she’s just different to me.”

Sydney didn’t flinch. Her voice dripped with sarcasm. “fferent how? Because it’s hotter when the little brother–in–law hooks up with the big sister–in–law?”

“Shut up! Are you insane?” Caleb hadn’t expected those words from her. A vein pulsed in his temple. “II living in this house is so unbearable for you, fine! Let’s get divorced!”

He hadn’t even realized what he’d said until it was already out. And by then, it was too late.

On the other end of the line, Sydney paused for a momer, then hung up.

Caleb walked over and cracked open a window, trying to get a breath of fresh air. Before he could, someone knocked loudly on the study door.

“Uncle Caleb! Mommy’s washing fruit. We’re going downstairs to eat!”

He opened the door and gave Timothy’s hair a quick ruffle. “Go on ahead. I’ll just wash my hands.”

“Okay!” Timothy nodded and dashed off. He loved the house now. That mean lady hadn’t shown up in ages. Everything felt right again.

After washing up, Caleb was about to turn off the tap when he noticed something by the sink. It was a pendant.

His expression softened.

Earlier, Sydney had asked him what was so “different.” Maybe this was it.

He ran his fingers over the smooth pendant, an ache rising in his chest he couldn’t quite name. Then he froze. Leaning in, he examined the carving on the back. name had been etched into the metal: Precious.

“Cal, I live on Swetham Road! You better come visit me sometime, okay?” Precious had told him.

He hadn’t called Penelope that nickname in years.

Just then, Penelope appeared in the doorway holding a fruit platter. She frowned. “I thought maybe you weren’t feeling well after drinking so much.”

At dinner, once everyone realized who he was, the toasts had come nonstop.

She spotted the pendant in his hand, tilted her head, and lifted her chin. “I forgot to put that back on after my shower. Help me with it?”

“Sure.”

Caleb stepped forward and bent slightly to clasp the chain around her neck. His voice dropped, low and hoarse. “Precious, I’m just glad I found you again.”

Penelope’s eyes narrowed. The words slipped out before she could stop them. “Precious? Who’s Precious?! You’ve never called me that.”

Chapter 73

Aside from Sydney, had there been other women in Caleb’s life too?

Caleb’s tall frame stilled. That instinctive wariness of his took over, stopping him mid–motion. His eyes darkened, though his voice remained even. “Your nickname. Did you forget it?”

“Ah?” Penelope hesitated. Panic flickered in her eyes, before she forced herself to stay composed. “Of course not. It’s just… Well, it’s been so long since anyone called me that. I didn’t react right away.”

“Really?”

“Of course it’s true.” Her heart pounded in her chest, her eyes slowly turning red. “After my parents died, who else would’ve called me that? Cal, it’s been 20 years. Isn’t it normal if I forgot?”

Tears spilled down her cheeks. “You’re really going to question me over that?”

“How could I? Don’t overthink it.” Caleb pushed down his unease and gently wiped her tears, his tone soft. ” It’s late. Go help Timmy get ready for bed.”

Seeing his expression return to normal, Penelope finally relaxed. “What about you?”

“I’ve got some work to finish. I’ll sleep after.” Caleb tucked the pendant into his pocket. “The clasp broke

just now. I’ll have Gordon take it to the jeweler tomorrow. Once it’s fixed, I’ll return it to you.”

He took the fruit platter from her and headed back to his study. As soon as the door closed behind him, he made a call.

The warmth had drained from his face. His voice was cool, edged with steel. “Gordon, take a team to Brimcrest. I want every detail of Penny’s background confirmed. Leave nothing out.

“Right away,” Gordon said, then hesitated. “But why now? After all these years? Did something feel off?”

“I’m not sure,” Caleb replied. “Just check.”

He hoped he was only imagining things.

On the other end of the earlier call, Tiffany had heard that last line clearly. Her brows drew together. She never would’ve guessed that an elegant and refined man like Caleb could be such a shameless scumbag

She turned to Sydney, frowning. “Why didn’t you just take the offer and go through with it?”

“It would’ve made everything messier.” Sydney tossed the phone aside and curled up on the couch. “I went to the Hampton residence around noon. His mom said the divorce papers will be ready in four days, tops, There’s no reason to involve him anymore.”

She didn’t want to invite any more uncertainty. Things were just fine the way they were.

The next day, Sydney met Marcus at the clinic, and they headed to Sterling Corp. together. She had passed by the building countless times over the years but had never stepped inside. She used to go out of her way to

avoid it.

If not for that unexpected encounter in Storia, she might have wished never to face Julian again.

“Sydney?” Marcus‘ voice pulled her back.

She had zoned out after getting out of the car.

He smiled. “What are you thinking about?”

She shook her head, brushing the thought away. “Nothing. I just never imagined I’d get the chance to work on a project this big.”

This cancer drug development project was a top–priority national health initiative for the next three years. If they succeeded, maybe she could finally be free.

When they arrived, the rest of the research team had already gathered in the conference room.

Scientists weren’t the type for small talk. Real collaboration would happen in the lab. With nothing to discuss yet, introductions were brief. Someone soon led sydney and the others to get familiar with the lab.

On the Medicine Team, besides Sydney and Marcus, there were three other men, all in their late thirties or early forties.

“Unbelievable,” one of them muttered, standing in the corner. “Pushing forty, and now I’m playing assistant to some girl in her twenties.”

“Oh? You unhappy about it?”

“Yeah. I am.”

“Same here.”

“You’re not?”

“What can we do? Maybe she’s got connections. These days, it’s way easier for women to climb the ladder.”

Marcus‘ face turned cold. He opened his mouth to speak but Sydney caught his arm and stopped him.

“I don’t care,” she said calmly. “Marc, the only way I can shut them up is by developing something they’ll respect,”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 74

The more Sydney tried to defend herself, the guiltier she would appear in other people’s eyes. She had already reviewed the résumés of the two men on her way here and felt certain she could silence them with

results.

She didn’t rush into conversation but walked over to the herb cabinet and began inspecting the contents

one by one.

Marcus asked, “Do we really need that many types of herbs?”

“No,” Sydney replied. “At the clinic, our herbs were vetted by our mentor from the beginning. The suppliers have followed that standard ever since, so we don’t need to double–check the quality. But for Sterling Corp., we have to check everything ourselves.”

Color, texture, age–even whether something was wild–harvested or cultivated–could affect a formula’s efficacy. In that sense, her specialized herbal medicine was far more difficult to develop than conventional drugs.

Marcus looked sheepish. “It’s been years, and I still haven’t made that a habit.”

“Well, that’s normal. You’re the boss,” Sydney said lightly. “There’s always someone else handling the details for you.”

Marcus laughed as he looked at her. “Then I’m counting on you to keep an eye on the clinic for me.”

“Don’t worry.” As she spoke, she picked up an herb and brought it to her nose for a careful sniff.

The two men sitting in the corner watched with undisguised contempt. Seeing her doing what they considered grunt work only fueled their disdain. Bored, they slouched in their chairs and started playing games on their phones.

Sydney ignored them. Her attention stayed locked on her work. Once she finished inspecting the herbs, she and Marcus sat down to discuss the development plan.

When she shifted into work mode, her eyes sparked with intensity. For a moment, Marcus found himself so struck by her brilliance that he could barely follow her train of thought.

Dusk had already settled by the time someone knocked on the lab door, pulling her out of her zone.

Charlotte Lindstrom stood at the entrance, poised and elegant in a silk blouse and fitted skirt, her smile polished and warm. “To celebrate the official kickoff of the project team, Mr. Sterling has booked a private

room at Moonshine Pavilion for dinner.”

The project manager blinked in surprise, then quickly responded. “Of course, Charlotte, please thank Mr. Sterling for us.”

Charlotte smiled, “He’ll be attending in person. You can thank him yourself.”

“No way!” someone exclaimed.

Out of all the projects under Sterling Corp., only a few ever received Julian’s direct involvement. For him to show up at a team dinner? That was unheard of.

Charlotte only smiled, cryptic as ever. “Guess.”

Then she walked straight over to Sydney, extended her hand, and said with a smile, “Hi, Ms. Wilson. I’m Charlotte Lindstrom, Mr. Julian Sterling’s secretary.”

Sydney froze for a beat. She hadn’t expected Charlotte to approach her so directly. Still, she quickly composed herself and shook the offered hand. “Ms. Lindstrom, I’m sure we’ll be relying on you quite a bit while we’re here at Sterling Corp.”

“Happy to help,” Charlotte replied smoothly. “Shall we add each other on WhatsApp?”

“Sure.”

Sydney couldn’t quite tell what the woman was aiming for, but exchanging contacts would definitely come in handy. “I’ll scan yours?”

After Charlotte left, the two men who had mocked Sydney earlier suddenly looked at her with something closer to respect—or wariness.

They had assumed she had only minor connections. But how? If even Charlotte treated her with that kind of deference, who exactly was backing her?

Sydney didn’t care what they were thinking. Before heading to the restaurant, she and Marcus finalized a few potential prescriptions.

Once at the restaurant, Sydney stopped by the restroom before joining the others.

When she pushed open the door to the private room, she froze. Earlier, when Charlotte hinted Julian might show up, most had assumed she was joking.

A man like him, drowning in responsibilities, couldn’t possibly make time for something as trivial as a project team dinner.

Yet there he was, with sharp, striking features and a cold, commanding presence that made the air feel heavier even as he sat there casually.

Hearing the door, Julian looked up. His eyes narrowed slightly as they landed on her. His voice came low and lazy. “Team Lead Wilson, why are you frozen at the door? Are you afraid of me?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 75

It was as if the private room emptied in an instant. The silence that followed was sharp enough to hear a pin drop.

Sydney rarely felt awkward, but this was a professional setting, and Julian was her most important client. She reminded herself to keep things strictly business.

A moment later, she composed herself and said, “Mr. Sterling, you must be joking.

She stepped inside and quietly shut the door behind her.

After only a few steps, she noticed something odd. The only empty chair was at Julian’s left. The servers had cleared out every other seat.

In the tight space, she glanced up and found Julian leaning back, watching her. His long fingers tapped the table in a steady rhythm, his gaze cool. “Still afraid of me, I see.”

Sydney resisted the urge to turn and walk out. Gathering herself, she stepped closer to his side. “Mr. Sterling, I guess your reputation at Sterling Corp. isn’t exactly stellar, or people wouldn’t react like that.”

“You’re quite perceptive.” He didn’t seem offended. “As around. Who isn’t afraid of me?”

He shot her a sidelong glance and gave the faintest hint of a smile. “You’re the only one who isn’t.”

No one else spoke.

They couldn’t tell whether he was praising her or dismissing the rest of them. Either way, when the boss singled someone out, it made everyone nervous.

The dinner carried on under heavy pressure. Everyone stayed sharp. They didn’t know the exact nature of Julian and Sydney’s relationship, but one thing was clear: there was something between them.

Just then, the door opened, and the servers returned with dishes.

Henry Linus, the project manager, raised his glass and turned to Sydney with a warm smile. “To Team Lead Wilson. The Medicine team owes you a great deal on this project. May I propose a toast?”

“It’s just my job,” Sydney replied, lightly tapping her glass. “Here’s to smooth cooperation.”

She finished her red wine without ceremony. But her tolerance was low. Within a few sips, color bloomed in her cheeks. Still, she handled it well, resting back in her hair with her chin propped in her hands.

At first, she felt in control. But as the night wore on, the oom blurred, and her head grew heavy.

Henry looked surprised. “Ms Wilson’s alcohol tolerance.”

“She doesn’t drink often,” Marcus said, picking up a ne by bottle. “Guess this one hit her harder than expected.”

Then, at just the right moment, Marcus spoke up again It’s getting late. I’ll take her home.”

Sydney barely registered his voice. She felt someone guiding her toward the door. She had come with Marcus tonight and felt safe drinking with familiar faces around. In a setting where there were more men than women, alcohol always seemed to find its way in.

She didn’t mind giving Henry some respect. It would help keep things smooth for future collaboration. She just hadn’t expected the wine to hit her this hard.

As Marcus helped her out, a sleek black Bentley pulled up to the entrance.

The window rolled down. Julian sat behind the wheel, watching Marcus‘ hand on Sydney’s shoulder.

“Mr. Shepard, you might need to go back inside. Henry has a few professional questions for you.” The tone was subtle, but deliberate.

Marcus hesitated. He hadn’t heard Henry say anything earlier. He frowned. “But Sydney’s pretty drunk. Should I take her home first and come back?”

“No need. I’m fine,” she muttered.

Julian opened the car door, reached over, and pulled Sydney toward him by the waist.

“I’m heading out anyway. I’ll take her.” His tone was calm, as if he were doing a favor.

“No need to trouble yourself. Ms. Wilson’s had too much. I’ll take her myself,” he said lightly, like it was nothing.

Marcus hesitated, and his worry tightened his voice. “Mr. Sterling.”

Julian responded with cold detachment, his face unreadable. “Mr. Shepard, are you afraid I’ll traffic her off into some remote mountain?”

Marcus fell silent. He recalled rumors and ramblings from Alan suggesting a past intimacy between Julian and Sydney. Before that, Julian had seemed like a good brother.

After a moment, Marcus nodded. “In that case, thank you, Mr. Sterling.”

Julian nodded once, then lifted Sydney in a single motion and placed her sideways inside the car.

The sudden movement snapped Sydney into a daze. She scrambled on the leather seat and blinked up in confusion, murmuring, “Marc…”

The car cruised quietly. Under scattered streetlights, Julian’s profile looked harder and colder, impossibly sharp in the gloom. “Do you have a good relationship with Marcus?”

His voice cut through the fog clouding Sydney’s mind, easing her tension with its familiarity. She rested her head against the headrest, hazy but honest. “Yes, we get along. Marc treats me well.”

His gaze lingered on her pale, delicate cheek. His voice grew patient and coaxing. “But Jules doesn’t treat Precious well?”

“Jules?”

It had been years since anyone called her by that nickname. Maybe the alcohol loosened her nerves. She whispered softly, voice thick with resignation, “He… He doesn’t want me anymore.”

Even in her drunken haze, she remembered how coldly he had sent her back to Eloise’s side seven years ago. It was etched permanently in her heart. She had trusted him as family, but he treated her like trash.

“He never stopped caring.” Julian’s expression remained unreadable. He opened his mouth to speak, but her eyes glazed over as sleep took her.

Before drifting off, Julian asked, “Still living at Viridian Garden, right?”

“Not anymore. I’ve moved,” she slurred in reply when he pressed. “Aurum Road, Haven Building 2, Unit 21.”

The car jolted over a speed bump, and her head rocked gently.

Sydney felt uneasy until a large hand cradled her head, and she relaxed into its warmth. She sensed the soft palm on her cheek.

Julian started to withdraw his hand, intending to let her rest on his shoulder, but changed his mind.

Elliot quietly turned the car toward Aurum Road, his tor oddly pleased. “Mr. Sterling, I didn’t expect Ms. Wilson to live so close,”

Julian hummed and replied flatly. “Is that something to be glad about?”

Elliot choked on his excitement. It was just an impression. Maybe he had misread it.

Thirty seconds later, they pulled into the parking garage

The harsh glare from the lights made Sydney raise her arm. She blinked as they rolled to a stop in front of her building. She blinked again, steadying her vision, and recognized her home.

Fragments of earlier conversations buzzed in her mind.

‘That voice…‘ Her whole body stiffened. She turned slowly to the side, locking eyes with a towering figure and an angular jawline. Her gaze climbed to the sharp bridge of his nose and then into those fathomless dark eyes above it.

“Aren’t you madly in love with Caleb? Why are you living separately from him?” Julian questioned.

Once again, Sydney’s most humiliating secrets lay bare Before Julian. No matter how she heard it, she caught the mocking edge in his tone.

Without thinking, she snapped back sharply, “Who said Caleb and I are living separately? Mr. Sterling, you’re single. You wouldn’t understand. Sometimes sleeping in different places helps couples keep things fresh.”

Julian raised a brow, clearly amused by her prickly stance. “Is that so?”

He tilted his head slightly, his tone cold and detached. “Since when do couples ‘strengthen their bond‘ by bringing a best friend along?”

The alcohol still clouded her mind. Sydney blinked, confused. “What?”

“Tiffany called earlier,” Julian said smoothly, savoring her reaction. “She asked why you weren’t home yet.”

Sydney clenched her palm, realizing there was no point pretending anymore.

‘Fine. Let it all fall apart,‘ she thought.

“Yes, we are living apart,” she said bluntly. “My marriage is exactly what the rumors say. It’s a complete

mess.”

She stared at him. Her eyes rimmed red from the alcohol “This is what I got for marrying him despite your warnings. Happy now?”

Then she grabbed her bag and practically fled.

Three years ago, she had decided to marry Caleb. A man who hadn’t spoken a word to her in nearly four years suddenly reappeared, dragged her into a car, and coldly declared, “I don’t approve of this marriage.”

In the past, Sydney was even angrier than she was now. Even a stray dog would have earned some affection after nine years—but not her.

Sydney remembered that scorching summer day clearly!

Back then…

The pavement radiated heat well over 104°F. She knelt on the ground, nearly fainting from pain. The man who now controlled the mighty Sterling Corp. walked past her without a glance.

He only turned to a maid and said, “She upset Grandma again? Keep an eye on her. Don’t let her die.”

Then he walked away without looking back.

The next time he showed up, it was to dictate her marriage.

She didn’t take it well and ignored everything he said. The argument spiraled until she jumped out of the car.

Whatever bond they’d had shattered completely.

People who heard the story said Sydney didn’t know what was good for her.

Only after Sydney disappeared around the corner did Julian finally look away. He could still feel the softness of her skin on his fingertips.

The air in the car grew heavy as Elliot sighed. “Mr. Sterling, Ms. Wilson has always responded to kindness, not force. If you’d spoken gently, she probably would’ve forgiven you by now.”

“Oh? Do I owe her something?” Julian slowly removed his silver band. His icy dark eyes reflected in the rearview mirror. “Must I grovel for her forgiveness? I don’t owe her anything.”

‘I do,‘ Elliot thought silently. ‘I shouldn’t have brought it up.‘

He wanted to smack his own mouth. It wasn’t like he didn’t know Julian. He could be exhumed 500 years

from now and still have a stiff jaw. Literally.

‘Oh, wait, by then it wouldn’t just be his jaw. His bones would be clanking with stubbornness.

Sydney had barely unlocked the door when Tiffany burst from behind the desk and skidded to her knees in a

dramatic bow.

Tiffany hadn’t expected that. If she had known Julian answered Sydney’s phone earlier, she would have kept her lips sealed.

he smiled sheepishly. “So, I’m forgiven?”

You are.” Sydney nodded with a faint grin.

Honestly, she had never expected to keep the secret for long. It had felt humiliating when it came out in the ar earlier. But now, back home and upstairs, she actually felt relieved.

Let Julian laugh if he wants. Let him be arrogant. I am done caring,‘ she thought.

eeing Sydney’s mood was relatively normal, Tiffany pressed her luck. “Okay, but you have to tell me why

Because he doesn’t know how to respect boundaries,” Sydney said as if it were the most natural thing in he world. She had long since given up expecting that man to act rationally.

What?” Sydney gave her a look. “Have you ever seen someone ‘make amends‘ like that?”

iffany shrugged. “But if he really was trying, would you consider getting back on good terms with him?”

I won’t.” Sydney did not hesitate. She took a sip of honey water and said quietly, “Between people, there’s nly one real chance.”

ven if things looked fine on the surface, she would constantly wonder, ‘When will he abandon me again?”

“Come on, let’s go back out. No, wait! Don’t touch that!”

“I want to!” The kid had grabbed something and held it hostage. “I’m gonna break this! All because she bullied my mom!”

Just as Sydney arrived, one of the nurses rushed over, flustered and apologetic. “Sorry, Dr. Wilson. Penny brought her kid today and, well, he’s a handful. We couldn’t stop him.”

Of course she had. She had plenty of help at home, yet she chose to drag the kid into the clinic. Sydney had already experienced Timothy’s charming personality before.

“It’s fine. Not your fault,” Sydney said calmly and walked into the consultation room.

Luckily, it was not as messy as she had feared.

However, the moment Timothy saw her enter, he flinched, then straightened up defiantly and shouted, You meaniel Why do you keep trying to steal my uncle from my mom?!”

Silence fell. All eyes turned toward Sydney, their expressions a mix of shock and disbelief. Especially after the restaurant scene the other day–Sydney walking in with Caleb. Now this?

Everyone was starting to wonder whether they really knew who Sydney was. Had she been the other woman all along?

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 79

Sydney acted as if she hadn’t heard a word, her cold gaze fixed on the silver acupuncture set in the boy’s hand. “Give it back. Now.”

Alan had passed down a prestigious, centuries–old acupuncture technique, one taught to only a single protégé per generation. At 13, Sydney had already been chosen to inherit it. Even Marcus had never been granted access.

The silver needles had been a gift from Alan when she began her training. To her, they were priceless–both in sentiment and significance.

“I won’t! I want to piss you off!” The angrier she got, the more gleeful Timothy became. He yanked the needles from their case and flung them across the floor, stomping on them with both feet like a lunatic.

Sydney grabbed him by the collar and hauled him out of the consultation room. Her face darkened as she pinched his pudgy cheeks, her cold, sharp gaze locking onto his.

“If you come into my office again, I’ll jab every one of those needles into your head. Got it?” she said slowly. “I’ll turn you into a chubby little pincushion. Do you believe me?”

Timothy’s bravado collapsed. He trembled all over, his mouth twisting before he burst into wailing sobs. “I don’t believe you! You’re lying! Wahhh! Let go of me! I’m telling my mom!”

Sydney released him, and he bolted down the hallway, bawling like the sky had fallen.

He was such a coward, yet bold enough to cause trouble repeatedly. Did Penelope even treat him like her own child?

Not that it mattered to Sydney. He wasn’t her kid. Why would she care?

Although the clinic had seen fewer patients with the New Year approaching, Sydney hadn’t left her seat all morning. She didn’t see her final patient until nearly 1:00 p.m.

She didn’t head to the cafeteria. Instead, she gathered her things to leave for Sterling Corp.

Marcus had gone ahead earlier that morning.

As she stepped out of the restroom and turned back toward her office to grab her bag, a sharp, blood- curdling scream rang out from the stairwell. Then came the sound of something tumbling down the steps.

Acting on instinct, she pushed open the fire door and rushed in. The motion–sensor lights snapped on, flooding the stairwell with harsh white light.

Timothy lay crumpled at the bottom of the stairs, deathly still. Blood was pouring from his head.

Sydney froze for only a second before racing down the steps to check his pulse and breathing.

Two nurses arrived seconds later, drawn by the noise, ad stood frozen in shock.

“Don’t just stand there!” Sydney snapped, calm but urgent. “Get something to stop the bleeding! And bring my silver needles!”

“Right away!”

Sydney grabbed the needles and began emergency acupuncture, her hands moving with practiced precision.

“Help me stop the bleeding,” she said, not looking up.

Snapped out of their panic, the nurses scrambled to assist. It wasn’t their fault. In a traditional clinic like this, traumatic emergencies were rare.

Just as Sydney inserted the final needle, Penelope burst in. She shrieked and shoved Sydney hard, sending her sprawling to the ground.

“He’s just a kid! How could you hurt him over something so small?” she demanded.

Sydney hadn’t braced herself. Pain shot through her elbow as she hit the floor. She looked up at Penelope, her expression frosty and calm.

“He was already like this when I got here,” she said coolly.

“Liar!” Penelope broke down completely, clutching Timothy’s limp body as tears streamed down her face. ” I can’t believe how cruel you are! You’re a monster! You don’t deserve to be a doctor!”

“Then wait for the police,” Sydney said coldly.

The nurse hesitated. Her gaze flicked to Sydney with a complicated expression, but she nodded anyway.

Someone nearby tried to reason with Penelope. “Penny, maybe let Dr. Wilson check on the kid first…”

“You think I would?” Penelope looked unhinged, her eyes blazing. “She already hurt my son. Who knows what she’ll do next and call it ‘treatment“?”

“Call an ambulance,” Sydney’s clear voice cut through the tension.

She turned without another word and walked off with a stony expression.

At the office, Sydney grabbed her bag, then passed the nurses‘ station on her way out, catching fragments of whispered conversation.

“Could she really be the one who hurt that kid?”

“Who knows? I’ve got goosebumps. If it was her, I don’t think I could keep working with her.”

“And remember that restaurant a few days ago? She showed up with Mr. Hampton. Then that kid said what he said this morning. What if she really is the other woman?”

“Impossible!” Jasmine Larkin, one of the nurses closest to Sydney, couldn’t take it anymore. “Dr. Wilson isn’t that kind of person. Can you stop spreading gossip If you’ve got so much to say, why don’t you go ask her yourself?”

A mocking voice shot back, “Fine. You go ask her since you’re such good friends.”

Jasmine turned on her heel and stormed off–only to run straight into Sydney at the corner.

Sydney calmly patted her shoulder and said, “I’ve got something to take care of.”

“Dr. Wilson…” Jasmine hesitated. “Are you really going to let them talk about you like that?”

Sydney gave a composed smile. “The truth will come out. People will figure it out eventually.”

She gave a slight shrug. “As for the rest, they’ve already made up their minds. Let them talk.”

She never wasted time proving herself to others. The more you tried to explain, the more it drained you. Her energy was limited, and she wouldn’t spend it on pointless noise.

By the time Sydney arrived at Sterling Corp, Marcus‘ luh had just been delivered. She ended up sharing the meal with him.

He’d already heard what happened at the clinic. “What the hell was that?”

“I didn’t do it.”

“Who said you did?” Marcus handed her a pair of disposable utensils. “I know the kind of person you are.”

“Can they tell if the kid fell or if someone pushed him?”

“Probably pushed.” Sydney stirred her food slowly. “It it was an accident, the injury wouldn’t be that serious.”

Any doctor could tell the difference between wounds caused by external force and those from a natural fall.

“Got it.” Marcus nodded, thoughtful. “Let it go. Leave it to the police. Don’t stress about it.”

“Sure.” She wasn’t really listening.

If one were in the right, they would have nothing to fear from shadows. Penelope could fling all the accusations she wanted. Without proof, they meant nothing.

But before the police could reach any conclusion, Caleb would storm in, ready to defend that mother–and- son pair.

Sydney stayed late at the lab. She kept working until the gnaw of hunger finally broke her focus. It was past 10:00 p.m., but the R&D floor was still lit. Long nights were routine there.

As she stepped out of the elevator into the parking garage, she ran into Caleb. His face looked like a storm waiting to break.

“You’re coming to the hospital with me.” He didn’t wait for a response. He grabbed her arm and pulled, his grip landing right on her injury.

Pain shot up her arm, and she drew a sharp breath.

Caleb didn’t ask if she was hurt. He just threw her a cold look. “That hurt? And yet you had no problem doing that to Timmy?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 81

Sydney froze for a split second, instinctively defending herself. “It wasn’t me. Penelope was just-

“I don’t care who it was. Go apologize to Penny. Now.” Caleb’s tone brooked no argument.

Her elbow still throbbed where he’d gripped her too hard, but she dug in her heels, refusing to budge. No matter how hard he tugged, she stood her ground.

“I told you, it wasn’t me. Why should I apologize?” she questioned.

“Sydney,” Caleb paused mid–step, towering over her with narrowed eyes. “If this were the past, I wouldn’t have hesitated to believe you. But now, I don’t recognize you anymore.”

He’d witnessed the change firsthand.

When she smashed that vase on Penelope, he had told himself she had just been upset–people acted out when angry.

Lately, she used work at the clinic as an excuse, leaving at dawn and returning long after nightfall, barely present at home. Even when Nancy asked for a simple herbal recipe for Timothy, Sydney had refused. He kept telling himself she was young, still growing, and needed time.

Then came the restaurant incident. She had embarrassed Penelope and him publicly, then turned around and mocked both of them without remorse. Yet he had let it slide.

But moment by moment, she became nothing like the gentle, well–mannered girl he once knew. How could he trust her anymore?

Sydney gave a faint, mirthless smile. When she lifted her gaze, it was unnervingly calm. “Then believe whatever you want.”

As if his trust were so precious. Besides, he wasn’t investigating this. He wasn’t the law. The police would

handle it.

Caleb’s eyes locked onto hers, his handsome face clouding with disappointment. “What did you say?”

He couldn’t understand it. How had she become like this?

He had carefully considered this confrontation, prepared for her to be hurt, wronged, maybe even to cry. What he hadn’t expected was this indifference.

Sydney genuinely didn’t seem to care. Not about his words, or perhaps, not about him at all.

Sydney blinked slowly, “I said, believe whatever you want.”

She added, her voice soft but icy, “Caleb, don’t look at me as if I’ve disappointed you. You’re not the victim

here,”

Caleb stared at her, stunned. His hand slid away from harm. And just like that, everything they had once shared between them evaporated.

“When did you become like this?” Caleb’s voice was hollow.

“I’ve always been this way,” Being endlessly obedient had never been her nature. And now that they were here, Sydney didn’t mind revealing her true self.

“I appreciate these past three years, Caleb. For giving me space to work without distractions, and for keeping the Sterling family out of my business. But that doesn’t mean I owe you blind obedience. I’m not your punching bag,” she said.

“So what you’re saying is…” Caleb’s eyes sharpened with realization. His tone turned scathing. “You’ve been using me? Using the Hampton family?”

The thought hit him like a physical blow. Everything–her sweetness, her docile smiles, her compliance- had all been an act? Even their marriage had been part of her calculations?

If it were all part of some grand plan, then was every emotion she had ever shown him all a lie?

Fury rushed in, but it tangled with something else–something heavier pressing on his chest until he could hardly breathe. He didn’t even recognize the feeling.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 82

This felt utterly foreign to Caleb, as if control had slipped from his grasp. He stared unblinking at Sydney and thought, for a fleeting moment, that if she admitted it, he might as well crush her.

Instead, she lowered her gaze and replied quietly, “Weren’t you using me too?”

It was mutual. Each had gained from the other.

He seized her jaw, forcing her eyes upward. “I’ll ask you one more time. Think carefully before you answer. You spent this marriage using me, didn’t you?”

His grip twisted her jaw toward dislocation. Her eyes flushed red, and reason bled away. Still, she answered without wavering, “Yes. It’s true. You, Caleb–you betrayed this marriage! What made you think you had the right to question me so freely?”

That question had burned in her chest from the start. At first, she had considered entrusting her future to him. She had wanted his affection, to be the obedient wife, the proud daughter–in–law of the Hampton family. She had not abandoned those hopes lightly.

Now his hold only tightened. The urge to crush her pulsed through him.

“I’ve explained it to you a thousand times!” he growled. I’ve said my wife is irreplaceable and you will always be the Hampton family’s daughter–in–law! Sydney, how can you not understand that?”

His voice softened, almost merciful, and Sydney nearly laughed.

When her silence lingered, Caleb mistook it for regret. He released her jaw with reluctance. Confrontation disgusted him, so he gentled his tone. “Let’s pretend tonight never happened. Penny also wants in on Sterling Corp.’s project. You’re the team lead and can bring a member if you wish. Make this your gesture of goodwill. Apologize properly–for her sake and Timmy’s.”

The offer caught Sydney off guard. Clarity returned to her voice. “In terms of credentials and ability, Penelope isn’t qualified for that project.”

Sydney had studied under an expert in the field for 15 years, inherited his teachings fully, practiced for three years, and even helped develop medicines.

What did Penelope have?

“Penny is a top graduate from Jouleston University,” Caleb said, frowning. “She’s also your senior. You only have a bachelor’s. Why should she be beneath you?”

Sydney’s eyes stayed cold. “If you’re unhappy, call the police.”

“Sydney!” His patience faded. “Don’t make me regret my decision from all those years ago!”

“What decision?” A shadow of sadness crossed her eyes. “To marry me?”

He had regretted it first.

In his silence, she smiled.

“Then regret it.” She spun on her heel, strode out of the elevator lobby, and ran straight into Julian, who stood two steps away at the other door.

Unsurprisingly, he must have heard at least part of the exchange.

Her anger flared. “Mr. Sterling, you enjoy eavesdropping, don’t you?”

He shrugged, unbothered. One hand rested in his pocket as his gaze swept over her from head to toe. Then, he asked in a smooth, aloof tone, “How about you? Do you regret it?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 83

“I don’t regret it,” Sydney answered without hesitation.

She had asked herself the same question long ago and already knew the answer. Without the Hampton family’s support–and Eloise’s refusal to let them severies–Sydney would have been crushed by now. If Sterling Corp. had discovered her early, she would no longer be working at the clinic.

For all their faults, the Hamptons, even Caleb, had treated her with a basic measure of respect. She had once hoped Caleb could become a good husband. When he failed to be one, she saw it as unfortunate, not devastating.

For three years, she had been content.

Julian gave a short, derisive snort. “You loved him that much?”

His dark eyes fixed on her as if to strip away every layer of pretense.

Sydney smirked. “Yes, I loved him that much.”

She lifted her chin and met his gaze. Her eyes stayed clear and steady. “Mr. Sterling, you seem unusually invested in this. Are you still single? Is it so difficult for you to see a close friend happy with someone else?”

He and Caleb had once been close.

Julian’s expression froze for an instant. Then, with a cool air, he asked, “And who said I’m single?”

The question caught Sydney off guard. For half a heartbeat she was stunned, unsettled. Then she recovered and allowed herself a faint smile. “Congratulations, then. If you ever hold a wedding, be sure to send me an

invitation.”

Once she was in the car, the unease lingered. She turned it over in her mind until the answer became clear. It

was jealousy.

Like a younger sister watching her brother grow close to someone new, she felt the subtle ache of losing her place. The shift hurt, but it was natural. Even after their bond had fractured, their shared past was long, their reliance on each other deep.

Now they were distant, and he had someone else. The sting in her chest was normal. It was logical and understandable.

Sydney shook her head, pushing the thought away, and drove home.

”

The next morning, a ringing phone pulled her from sleep. It was the police. Because of Timothy’s injuries, she was a key person of interest and needed to cooperate, and they summoned her to the police station.

“We’ve reviewed the medical report,” the female officer said evenly. “The doctors confirmed the child received first aid almost immediately.”

They must have meant the emergency acupuncture.

“Did you perform the treatment?” she asked.

“Yes,” Sydney replied with a nod.

The officer hesitated, then asked, “What is your relationship to Timothy?”

“He’s my husband’s nephew.”

“And your relationship with his mother, Penelope? Any conflict?”

Sydney arched an eyebrow. “You mean imagined romantic rivalry? She believes I’m trying to steal her boyfriend–my husband.”

The officer stopped taking notes, trying to piece it together. “You mean she’s having an affair with your husband?”

“That’s right.”

The officer gave a pointed look. “If that’s the case, you have a motive for a crime.”

Sydney frowned, startled.

“Then you’ve misunderstood.” Her tone turned firm. “She may see me as a rival, but I don’t see her that way. I don’t care what happened between them, and it makes no difference to me now. If my husband wants a divorce, I’ll agree without hesitation.”

Before Sydney could continue, the interrogation room door swung open.

Caleb strode in, his voice clipped and commanding. “Don’t think you can evade responsibility.”

He had canceled his meetings and come straight to the station.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 84

Caleb hadn’t expected to hear that sentence.

“Mr. Hampton, you’re here.” The female officer regarded him calmly. “This could go either way–a serious case or just a family matter. If you can settle it privately, that’s best.”

Caleb glanced at Sydney. Her expression was distant, unreadable. Tension rose in his chest, but he kept it contained.

“Then, we’ll let the police handle it,” he said.

Sydney’s long lashes fluttered, though her face stayed composed. She meant what she’d said earlier. She didn’t care about him–not even a little.

Caleb frowned. He couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t at least pretend to be vulnerable. If she had just admitted fault and apologized, he might have let it go for old times‘ sake.

But she didn’t even try.

His voice turned cold. “I may be family, but a moment of weakness doesn’t excuse crossing the line. Actions have consequences.”

He turned and walked out.

The officers resumed their procedure, asking Sydney a few more questions. Once they confirmed the details, they released her.

Outside, the winter chill cut through Sydney’s clothes. The air was biting.

A familiar black Maybach waited by the station entrance As she passed, the window rolled down, revealing Caleb’s composed, impassive face. He rarely looked this cold.

“Tomorrow is Grandma’s birthday banquet. I’ll pick you up. We’ll return to the family residence together,” he announced.

‘So that was his reason…‘ Sydney saw it clearly now. It was all for Penelope. No matter how distant their relationship had become, he was still willing to put on a show for his grandmother’s sake. He wanted her to pretend they were a loving couple and maintain the illusion for the Hamptons.

Not this time.

Sydney shook her head. “I don’t have time tomorrow.”

She needed to stay focused on Sterling Corp.’s project. Her independence, her future–everything she’d worked for–mattered more than appearances. If she was going to walk away from the Hampton name, she had to prove herself.

Sterling Corp. was her shot at doing that. She couldn’t afford to be buried again.

Caleb’s lips curled with derision. “Not even pretending anymore?”

Before she could answer, two message notifications appeared on her phone. The messages were from Adeline.

The first one read: [The divorce papers are ready. Remember to attend Grandma’s banquet tomorrow.]

A photo followed. A scanned image of the divorce papers Her name was printed clearly.

Relief hit her in a quiet, overwhelming wave. Her shoulders relaxed, and a slow smile lit her face. When she looked up at Caleb again, her voice had softened. “I’m free tomorrow.”

Caleb blinked, caught off guard by how radiant her smile suddenly looked.

“What did you say?” he asked.

“I said I can go with you.” Her tone was light, almost cheerful.

His brow tightened. Ever since she’d checked her phone, something had changed. Her entire mood had changed, like the heroine of a drama responding to a lover’s message.

His voice sharpened. “Who just messaged you?”

“That’s personal.” She wasn’t about to hand him that answer.

Caleb’s jaw clenched. Even Penelope hadn’t stirred his emotions like this. Maybe that was what stung the most being toyed with, made to feel small.

He narrowed his eyes. “Syd, act all you want. But infidelity? That’s where I draw the line.”

Her voice turned tender again. “I know.”

They weren’t married anymore.

Caleb saw the calm in her posture. She looked composed maybe even submissive. He let out a breath. The anger eased from his voice. “I’ll pick you up tomorrow. Be ready.”

“Sure,” she replied.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 85

Chapter 85

Sydney had suspected Caleb’s reason for inviting her to the banquet, but she hadn’t foreseen his mother’s scheme.

The moment she arrived, she spotted several elite young women gathered around Adeline, and everything clicked. This wasn’t just a birthday party for Dorothy. It was a matchmaking event, and Adeline was using it to reassert her authority in full view of the guests.

Now that the divorce was final, the message was clear: “With you out of the picture, my son can find someone far better.”

Apparently, the marriage had been a mistake from the start.

“Cal, you’ve arrived.”

As Sydney and Caleb entered arm in arm, Adeline’s eyes licked to the hand resting on her son’s sleeve.

Her expression cooled, and a flash of displeasure passed through her gaze, but her tone stayed composed. ” Sydney, I was just speaking about you. You should greet Grandma first.”

“Okay,” Sydney replied quietly.

No one wanted to be the unwanted guest tonight. She gave a small nod and stepped away.

“I’ll go with you,” Caleb offered.

“Caleb, go later,” Adeline said, as if nothing were wrong “The unmarried daughters from the Soren and Collin families are here to celebrate Grandma’s birthday Host them in the sitting room. Don’t neglect your

duties.”

Caleb hesitated, his frown deepening. He couldn’t defy her here. “Understood.”

Sydney genuinely wanted to congratulate Dorothy, but someone told her the elderly woman had gone upstairs to rest with her relatives. She turned toward the buffet instead.

As she neared the table, a sharp pinch on her waist stopped her cold.

Sydney froze. She turned to find Victor smirking nearby relaxed and smug.

“Don’t think I can’t see what the Hamptons are doing. They’re replacing you,” he said with a mocking edge.

Anger and humiliation surged. He was a fool, but he wasn’t wrong. Adeline had always wanted her gone. If Caleb found someone he liked tonight, Adeline might even announce the divorce publicly.

Sydney tightened her grip. Before she could speak, Victo skin crawl. “I could do anything to you right here, and me. You get that, right?”

stepped closer, grinning in a way that made her cause of who my family is, they wouldn’t dare stop

She did. The Hamptons would cover up anything that could bring shame. They’d bury her without a sound. Victor could destroy her tonight, and no one would ever hear a word of it.

It was the first time he saw fear on her face. He seized he wrist and dragged her from the hall.

“Victor, let go of me!” She didn’t dare struggle too much She didn’t want to draw attention.

“Try it. I dare you.” He hauled her across the courtyard and slammed her against the garden wall. “Sydney, you know I’ve wanted you for years.”

His gaze swept over her. He might have lived in Julian’s shadow, but as the second heir, Victor had seen his share of beautiful, high–class women.

Julian had studied abroad, mingled with foreign elites, and always got what he wanted. Victor was trying to prove he could do the same.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 86

Chapter 86

Plenty of “pure schoolgirl” types had shown up to the gathering tonight, but next to Sydney, they all faded into the background.

She wore a simple dark–green dress. Nothing flashy, not among the elite daughters in attendance. Still, her figure and that face drew attention without effort.

Victor licked his lips. “With a waist and hips like that, I bet it’d feel incredible to touch.”

“Go ahead, try it.” Sydney leaned casually against the wall with a faint smile. “Then guess which hand Julian will cut off when he finds out. Left or right?”

Julian’s name alone made Victor flinch. Fear of him had been embedded since childhood.

He tried to recover some swagger. “Do you take me for an idiot? After that family dinner, it’s obvious you and Julian haven’t been in touch privately.”

He had no proof, but it made sense. Even without being close to the Sterlings, anyone in the extended family picked up on things.

Sydney’s fingers curled into her palm, but her expression stayed mild. “If I hadn’t been in touch with him, do you think I could’ve gotten into Sterling Corp.’s project?”

She meant the cancer research initiative. He’d heard the rumors, but given how many times she had tricked him before, trusting her now was a risk.

“It could be a coincidence,” Victor muttered. “They’ve got hundreds of projects. He can’t oversee them all. Someone probably slipped you in.”

“But me?” She gave a light shrug. “A complete nobody? If it weren’t for his help, how could I possibly get in?

11

That hit him hard.

Her only real achievement had been one stellar exam and gaining admission to Jouleston University. After that, she’d kept a low profile, working quietly at a clinic. By credentials alone, she shouldn’t have qualified for any major initiative of Sterling Corp., let alone a flagship project.

Victor narrowed his eyes. “You really still meet with Julian?”

“Of course.” She nodded, calm as ever. “He drove me home after the department dinner a few days ago.”

She said that without guilt because it was true, And if Victor decided to pull surveillance records, she was already prepared.

“You!” Victor ground his teeth. “Just wait. If I catch you lying to me again, I swear I’ll ruin you!”

He stormed off, furious. The moment he thought he had the upper hand, Julian threw everything off again.

Back in the hall, a young woman approached him, holding two glasses. She was attractive, but half her appeal came from trying too hard to appear refined. It felt forced. She wasn’t his type.

Victor frowned. “What do you want?”

“I do need something.” Penelope smiled and offered hin a glass. “Victor, right? Maybe we can work

together.”

He eyed her, and his eyes betrayed a flicker of contempt. ‘You’re the sister–in–law who has an affair with Caleb, aren’t you?”

That made her Sydney’s sister–in–law as well. His interest stirred. “What kind of cooperation are we talking about?”

Penelope glanced toward the courtyard, then looked up at him with a clear, bright smile. “A mutually beneficial one.”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 87

After dealing with the young women in the sitting room Caleb slowly grasped the full weight of the

situation.

No sooner had he stepped out than his mother, Adeline, approached him. “What do you think of those young women tonight?”

“What do you mean by, ‘What do I think‘?” Caleb asked, already knowing where this was going.

Adeline’s expression turned serious. “Don’t play dumb. You’re my son. Don’t think I don’t know how sharp you are.”

Caleb hesitated. He didn’t want to provoke an argument but was no longer willing to hide how he felt either. “Mom, you’re interfering in my personal life. It would be better if you stayed out of it.”

His tone was cooler than usual, but Adeline didn’t take offense. She replied evenly, “If you don’t want me involved, then what are you planning to do?”

Caleb frowned. He had no plans. Just as he had told Sydney, she was the only one he considered his wife. Although she had been difficult lately, he could admit that much of it was his fault. He understood that a young woman in love might lash out when she felt jealous or ignored.

However, his silence seemed to worry Adeline. She frowned and snapped, “Are you thinking of bringing Penelope into the Hampton family as a second wife? Two of my sons married to the same woman? What do you think people will say?”

The idea alone unsettled her so much that it had begun to keep her up at night.

Caleb let out a soft sigh. “Mom, what are you even talking about? I already have a wife. How could I possibly consider marrying someone else?”

Adeline looked away, unprepared for his response but unwilling to back off. “You’ve never thought about divorcing Sydney and marrying Penelope?”

“Of course not. I know what’s right,” he said firmly. “Don’t arrange anything like that again. And stop speaking to Sydney behind my back.”

Adeline hesitated, then gave a reluctant nod. “Sure.”

Caleb studied her face. Something didn’t sit right. “Are you hiding something from me?”

“No,” she said flatly.

But in her heart, she had already made up her mind. Sydney had to go. The moment Sydney demanded financial support and refused to negotiate, Adeline had lost all respect for her.

A woman who chose self–interest over dignity would never support her son’s future. She would only drag him down.

…

Once Victor left, Sydney leaned heavily against the wall and let out a long, weary breath. Her nerves had been on edge all day. Now that the tension had passed, she realized she had clenched her fist so tightly that her palm was bleeding.

Every time she saw Victor, those old memories surged back–trauma, violation, fear–all flashing like waking nightmares.

She forced herself to breathe until the panic subsided. After that numbing chill passed, she straightened her dress and returned to the hall. She reminded herself why she came tonight.

As soon as she entered, a maid acting on Adeline’s orders guided her upstairs to the study.

Adeline sat inside, pouring tea. She glanced at Sydney. “Where did you go? Your legs look frozen.”

“The hall was stifling,” Sydney said calmly. “I stepped into the courtyard for some air.”

Adeline slid a teacup toward her. “Try this. Fresh from the garden this morning.”

The aroma alone offered a brief comfort. Raised by Julian, who had a discerning palate, Sydney had grown familiar with many varieties of fine tea and coffee.

She took a small sip. “Where are the divorce papers?”

The confrontation had already happened. There was no point in pretending otherwise.

Adeline paused, then set her teacup down. “I meant to give them to you today. But now, I think it’s safer to wait.”

Sydney frowned. “What do you mean?”

Everything she had done tonight made it clear she was here to sever all ties with the Hampton family.

Sydney could not help but wonder about Adeline’s sudden reluctance.

Adeline sighed softly and smiled. “What if I give you the divorce papers today, and you announce the divorce publicly? Then what will I do?”

Sydney replied calmly, “We signed a contract. That should be enough.”

Adeline’s tone turned cold. “A contract only binds honorable people.”

She was implying Sydney could not be trusted.

Sydney did not lose her temper. She simply asked, “Then when will you give them to me?”

“Only when Caleb is ready to remarry-”

“Which won’t happen,” Sydney interrupted, locking eyes with her ex–mother–in–law. “I agreed to keep it secret until you found someone suitable. But whether Caleb is willing or not, it is not something I can rely on.”

She refused to wait indefinitely.

Adeline bristled at how casually Sydney spoke of her son as if he were disposable. After a pause, she said sharply, “One month. After the festival. Fair enough?”

Caleb likely cared little for Sydney anyway. Adeline could soon find several eligible young women for him. Maybe he would take a fancy to someone new.

Sydney lowered her eyes. After a moment’s hesitation, she nodded. “Alright.”

Still seeking confirmation, she left the study and forwarded the photo of the divorce papers Adeline had sent yesterday to Tiffany.

Sydney: [Tiff, can you check if these divorce papers are real?]

Tiffany replied instantly.

Tiffany: [WTF?! You actually got the divorce papers?!]

Sydney: [Do you think they could be forged?]

Tiffany answered cautiously.

Tiffany: [There’s about a 10% chance they’re fake.]

Sydney refused to risk everything on that 10%.

Meanwhile, the Hampton family gathered on the second floor to celebrate Dorothy’s birthday. Even Penelope was there.

Sydney stepped forward and heard Dorothy’s cheerful call. “Sydney, dear, I’ve been waiting for you!”

“I was talking with Mom for a moment,” Sydney answered warmly.

She offered the gift she had prepared with polite grace.Grandma, I wish you long life and good health.”

“Ah, such a sweet girl!” Dorothy said, gently patting her hand. “Come sit by Caleb.”

A seat beside Caleb was open. Sydney lowered her gaze and moved quietly toward it.

Just before she sat, Penelope spoke up. “Grandma, Timmy has been eager to celebrate with you. But he was injured a few days ago and is still in the hospital.”

“Timmy got injured?” Dorothy frowned. “What happened?”

Despite the tension at home, Timothy was their only grandson, and their concern was clear.

Caleb immediately looked up, signaling Penelope to stop

Dorothy was kind but ruled the family firmly. With this issue emerging, Sydney knew she would face trouble.

Penelope hesitated, then said, “Maybe you should ask Sydney…”

Dorothy frowned. “Ask Sydney? What does this have to do with her?”

Penelope’s voice cracked as she spoke urgently. “Grandma, please stop asking me.”

Dorothy glared and slammed the table. “Why are you acting so strange? Just tell us now!”

Finally, Penelope’s voice trembled with reluctant certainty. “Sydney pushed Timmy down the stairs. He’s been hospitalized for days. His head wound hasn’t healed.”

Chapter 89

Sydney didn’t bother arguing with Penelope’s nonsense. She turned to Dorothy and said, “Grandma, the incident has already been reported to the police. The investigation is still ongoing.”

“Don’t twist the facts!” Penelope’s voice rang with righteous indignation, like a mother protecting her child. “Timmy was hurt, and you were the only one there. If it wasn’t you, then who? It’s been days, and you haven’t even visited him. If that’s not a guilty conscience, what is?”

Sydney was honestly stunned by how warped her logic could be.

Dorothy fixed her with a sharp gaze. Her tone turned severe. “Sydney, is what your sister–in–law said true?”

“It’s true I was there, but I have no guilty consc—”

“That’s enough,” Dorothy cut in coldly. “Whatever disagreements you may have, the child is innocent. We have guests today, but I want you to reflect overnight in the family hall.”

The Hampton family hall served two purposes: religious prayers and enforcing discipline. It sat tucked away in a remote corner of the rear courtyard, cold in the winter and stifling in the summer.

It wasn’t as extreme as kneeling on gravel, like in the Sterling family, but spending a winter night there nearly guaranteed a fever.

Sydney glanced at Caleb. He didn’t so much as flinch. She smiled faintly and said, “Grandma, while it’s true I was the only one present, I—”

She had just started to explain when a change in the atmosphere near the staircase drew everyone’s

attention.

Julian had arrived.

The noble Sterling heir was instantly surrounded by a crowd of socialites and VIPs eager for his attention.

Tonight, his mood seemed unusually light. He didn’t brush them off like he normally would, even replying with a casual air.

He had brought a date.

Charlotte Lindstrom, his secretary, stood beside him in perfectly tailored dark evening gown that hugged her figure with understated elegance. Her hand rested lihtly on his arm.

‘So Charlotte is his girlfriend…‘ Sydney thought. ‘She is entle and graceful. She truly suits him.‘

Sydney looked away. Then she heard Dorothy greet him with a smile. “Didn’t expect you to show up personally,”

Julian’s tone was lightly teasing, yet pointed. “If I didn’t come, what would I do while my dear sister is being falsely accused?”

The room fell silent. Since their falling out, this was the first time Julian had publicly acknowledged Sydney as his sister. In the past, some had hinted or speculated but he had never confirmed anything.

Only Sydney lowered her gaze. Her expression gave nothing away, her eyes fixed on the floor as if she hadn’t heard him. She had stopped trying to guess what Julian was thinking long ago. With the Hampton family on one side and Victor on the other, she wasn’t foolish enough to make enemies now.

Dorothy gave her a subtle glance, urging her to smooth things over.

Sydney didn’t respond.

Left with no other choice, Dorothy shifted her gaze to Penelope, sharp and direct.

Clearly rattled, Penelope forced a smile. “Mr. Sterling, I was only speculating. I had no intention of accusing Sydney. After all, she’s my sister–in–law.”

Charlotte’s smile never faltered as she replied with gentle precision, “Ms. Monroe, if you knew it was only speculation, perhaps next time you shouldn’t speak so carelessly. If Sydney is wronged, her brother will naturally be very upset.”

Caleb quickly stepped in. “Ms. Lindstrom, we’re all family here. Penny just misspoke in the heat of the moment. Of course the Hampton family wouldn’t allow Sydney to be wronged.”

Charlotte smiled again, clearly speaking for Julian. “Then that’s for the best.”

She handed a gift to Dorothy. “Madam Hampton, wishing you blessings as vast as the sea, and a life as enduring as the mountains.”

“Thank you.” Dorothy accepted the gift with a smile, then turned to Julian. “It’s rare to see you with a young lady at your side. Is something good on the horizon?”

Charlotte blushed but said nothing. She waited for Julian to speak.

Since he’d entered the room, Sydney hadn’t looked at him once. She stood with perfect composure, but she didn’t belong. She felt like a placeholder.

Caleb had defended Penelope with every word. And the place beside Julian now belonged to someone else.

She didn’t even know where to rest her gaze. No matter how she looked at it, Sydney felt like the extra one.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 90

Just as Sydney began to feel awkward, Charlotte appeared in front of her and took her hand as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “Ms. Wilson, you remember me, right?”

Sydney nodded. “Yes.”

She remembered Charlotte as Julian’s secretary. Some might be surprised that someone like Julian–cold, distant, and meticulous about boundaries–would ever lur the lines between work and personal life. There was no way he would date a subordinate.

However, Sydney knew better. Julian did whatever he wanted. When he chose to spoil someone, he would keep them close and even work for them if necessary. He had a way of indulging someone so completely that the rest of the world seemed to fall away.

And then he would let them go. Brutally.

Charlotte gave a warm smile. “I’d heard Mr. Sterling had a sister. I just didn’t expect it was you.”

Sydney didn’t know how to respond. In the end, she mumbled, “Yeah. I didn’t expect it either.”

Her voice came out too soft, so Charlotte tilted her head. “What was that?”

“Nothing.”

Sydney could tell she meant to be friendly.

Once, back when Julian still cared about her, there had been plenty of girls eager to cozy up to his sister. Being close to Sydney meant a shortcut to him. But now her relationship with Julian was colder than that of strangers, and Charlotte had no reason to flatter her.

Sensing the distance, Charlotte just smiled and said nothing more.

By the time the banquet ended, Sydney had planned to sp out quietly.

Unexpectedly, Adeline stopped her to help see the guests off. When she finally got outside, the familiar Maybach was long gone.

The butler gave a clipped explanation. “Ms. Monroe had an allergic reaction to something she ate. Mr. Hampton took her to the hospital.”

“I see.”

She declined his offer to arrange a car and left on her own. Instead of pretending to double back to Aurum Road midway through the ride, she figured she might as well just call a cab now.

“Ms. Wilson?”

She had just reached the main road outside the estate and pulled out her phone when a Bentley slowed beside her.

The back window rolled down to reveal Charlotte, frowning. “You’re going home alone at this hour? Where’s Mr. Hampton?”

Sydney turned and saw Julian beside her. He sat with his eyes closed, resting. His sharp profile looked impassive, as if their conversation hadn’t even registered.

“He had something urgent come up,” she said.

“Then come on, we’ll drop you off,” Charlotte offered.

“No need. I already called a ride…”

“Come on, it’s not safe for a woman to ride alone at night. Your brother would worry.”

Before Sydney could refuse, Charlotte stepped out, opened the passenger door, and gently ushered her inside.

Peter was driving. Julian and Charlotte sat in the back. Sydney ended up in the front passenger seat.

Something felt off. Why did it suddenly feel like she was the child in a family of three?

Before she could dwell on it, Charlotte smiled from the back. “I’m three years older than you. Since your brother calls you Syd, I hope you don’t mind if I do too?”

Sydney hesitated.

Sensing she might have overstepped, Charlotte quickly added, “Sorry, I’ll stop if—”

“It’s fine. Call me whatever you like.”

Julian had never called her that.

Charlotte leaned back, visibly relieved, sneaking a glance at the man beside her who still hadn’t opened his eyes. She couldn’t help but think the two really were siblings. Both were quiet and unreadable. Their personalities weren’t identical, but they gave off the same impression–like cool, distant shadows.

The rest of the ride passed in silence.

For Sydney, every second dragged. Even breathing felt unnatural.

She kept replaying the moment Charlotte had pushed her into the car. Why hadn’t she moved faster?

When the familiar buildings of Haven finally came into view, she nearly wanted to beg Peter to speed up.

Then the brake lights flared across the lanes ahead–aghttime traffic jam.

From the backseat, Julian spoke, his voice unreadable. “Was there poison in the wine at the banquet?”

Setting aside everything else, Sydney still thought his voice was the most pleasant she had ever heard. Low, warm, and just a little too casual.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 91

Sydney’s thoughts moved sluggishly, a beat behind. For a moment, she assumed Julian was talking about Penelope’s allergic reaction.

“The wine wasn’t poisoned. Penelope just had an allergic-”

“I meant you,” Julian cut in lazily. “When did you become half mute?”

She blinked, the sarcasm landing at last. He wasn’t talking about the wine. He meant how cold she’d been to his girlfriend earlier.

Charlotte, oblivious to the tangle that was the Hampton family, offered a tentative smile. “Maybe Mr. Hampton rushed Ms. Monroe to the hospital?”

“Right.” The word had barely left Sydney’s mouth when a faint snort of laughter cut through the air.

Julian’s cool, distant voice followed. “All bark at home.”

“Mr. Sterling, not all of us can cut people down with a single sentence,” Sydney snapped, her voice tight and measured, each word biting through the tension.

What she hated most was how he always stood above it all, passing judgment as if the rest of them lived in. the dirt beneath his shoes.

However, she wasn’t like him. She couldn’t shake the ground just by stomping her foot. She was the one who’d been crushed–by the Hampton family, by the Sterlings, or maybe by both.

She wanted out. Out of the Hamptons. As far from the Sterlings as she could get. Even this divorce had taken everything she had to fight for.

And to Julian, it was nothing. Ridiculous. Beneath him.

The air tensed around them.

Charlotte picked up on the tension and tried to ease it. “Syd, your brother didn’t have it easy either. These past few years-‘

Julian’s voice sliced through hers. “Let her speak.”

“I’m done.”

“Then I stand by what I said. You’re all bark at home.” He looked down at her, same as always–distant, superior. “It was Caleb who wronged you. Why are you taking it out on me? Or do you think the whole world owes you something?”

Sydney couldn’t even remember the last time she cried. But his words struck like a slap. The tears came before she could stop them, streaming hot and fast down her cheeks.

She turned away, took a breath, and tried to swallow the lump in her throat. Then she said with a bitter smile, “Only others owe you, Mr. Sterling. You certainly don’t owe me.”

She flung the door open and stepped out, walking into the street without a backward glance.

Charlotte was startled. As she reached for the handle, Julian’s sharp voice cracked through the car. “Let her go.”

“Mr. Sterling…” Charlotte hesitated. “She looked like she was crying.”

She hadn’t expected a reaction. But the moment she spoke, she saw him freeze for a second.

Sydney reached home cold to the bone, inside and out. And only then did she remember the last time she’d cried.

It had been the day Julian–who once treated her like the most precious thing in his life–sent her back to Eloise’s house without a word. Not long after that, he moved out of the main estate altogether.

He’d made it clear: he didn’t want her anymore.

Back then…

She couldn’t believe it and ran after him, grabbing his arm before he could leave. “Jules, tell me what I did wrong. Tell your Precious… Please don’t leave me. Please don’t leave me, okay?”

Her tears spilled freely, and her eyes shimmered, desperate and broken.

Normally, if her eyes even welled up, Julian would treat her like a princess and coax her gently until the tears disappeared.

But he only looked down at her coldly. “I was bored. I raised you for a few years, and you really thought you were my sister? Sydney, is your pride so cheap you’d throw it away just to cling to me?”

Her tears stopped right then.

After that, she never cried again.

The gossip swirling around the clinic hadn’t bothered Sydney at first, but it was getting worse.

The next morning, just as she slung her bag over her shoulder to leave, her phone rang. It was Marcus.

“Syd, maybe take a couple days off? Or better yet, head straight to Sterling Corp.’s research center. Focus on the project for now,” he suggested.

?”

“It’s the stuff with Penelope’s son and your situation with Caleb,” Marcus said, hesitating.

He was clearly trying to protect her.

“People are saying some really nasty things right now. just thought coming in might make things worse for you. Maybe it’s better to take a few days off, let things settle,” he said.

་་

Sydney hadn’t expected that to be the reason. As she locked up and pressed the elevator button, she said, Marc, if I don’t show up, that’ll just make me look guilty I’ve already scheduled appointments for today. If I don’t go, are you going to take my patients?”

“Well, that’s true,” Marcus admitted, sounding uneasy. Your patients are all complex cases. I’m not sure I can…”

“Exactly. I can’t just ghost on them.” She chuckled. “People can say whatever they want. I know what I did and didn’t do. A clear conscience fears no shadow.”

Hearing her laugh eased some of Marcus’s worry. “You really mean that?”

“What else am I supposed to do?”

Sydney stayed calm. She had learned a long time ago not to let someone else’s mistakes ruin her day. If she hadn’t figured that out, every punishment from Eloise at the Sterlings would’ve crushed her.

If one person slandered her, that was their issue. If a whole group joined in, then something was wrong with all of them.

She hung up and was about to head out when Tiffany came sprinting from the bedroom. “I’ve got one good piece of news and one bad. Which do you want first?”

“Good news,” Sydney said without hesitation.

“The divorce papers are real!” Tiffany beamed, but her expression turned grim. “The bad news is that you can’t request a replacement copy. I asked around. Your ex–mother–in–law already greased some palms at the courthouse.”

“The fact that it’s real is all that matters.” Sydney didn’t seem surprised. As long as she was legally single again, she didn’t care what games Adeline tried to play.

Most likely, Adeline wouldn’t go out of her way to stir up more trouble. There were just a few hoops to jump through until Caleb remarried, and it would all be over.

“You still need to get the papers, though ” Tiffany was as optimistic. “It they change their minds, they can pull some strings and turn that divorce back into a parriage certificate.”

Sydney licked her lips. “I want them too, but Adeline’s not going to hand them over just like that.”

“Then maybe lean on Julian a little?” Tiffany offered the suggestion cautiously, remembering their recent contact. “He’s the only one in Jouleston with enough pu to pressure the Hamptons. It he stepped in, this would be done in a snap.”

“I’ll think about it.” If she went to Julian, she could already hear the sarcasm in his voice.

She glanced at Tiffany’s pale and sleep–deprived face and changed the subject. “You pulled another all- nighter?”

“Yeap,” Tiffany groaned. “Hurry up and start supporting me, or I’m going to drop dead from this grind.”

Sydney laughed. “I could support you right now.”

She had enough in savings. As long as Tiffany didn’t blow it all on gambling, drugs, or wild clubbing, the two of them could live comfortably for the rest of their lives.

“Just hearing that…” Tiffany grinned. “I feel like I can hang in there a little longer.‘

Having a safety net changed everything.

Sydney chuckled and told her to at least eat something before sleeping. Then she headed for the clinic.

Sydney hadn’t even stepped into the reception area when chaos broke out inside.

A female patient had grabbed a young nurse by the arm and refused to let go. “You little bitch! What kind of nonsense were you just spouting? Do you have any manners at all?”

“Ma’am, I didn’t say anything bad!” The nurse’s voice trembled. “Everyone in the clinic’s talking about it. It’s not just me. Why are you coming at me like this?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 93

“So just because everyone’s saying it, that makes it true?” The female patient’s voice rose sharply as she turned to address the waiting area. “You all tell me this nurse claims Dr. Wilson assaulted someone and got involved in someone else’s marriage. Does that sound even remotely believable to you?”

“No way!”

“Absolutely not!”

Everyone in the clinic had seen Sydney’s integrity and professionalism firsthand. Someone who treated people with that much care couldn’t possibly be the kind of person they were describing.

The young nurse, clearly flustered now, snapped back, it’s not up to you to decide what’s true! That kid’s already in the hospital, isn’t he?”

“Dr. Wilson!” someone called from the nurse’s station, cutting her off.

The nurse immediately went silent. Her face flushed red as she turned toward the entrance.

Sydney walked in, calm and composed. She didn’t look angry at all.

She approached the nurse and said evenly, “Starting tomorrow, you’ll be reassigned to another doctor’s consultation floor. Once you’ve made your choice, let me know and I’ll inform HR.”

Then she looked around at the rest of the staff. “If anyone else wants a transfer, now’s the time to say so.”

“No…”

“We don’t want to!”

Everyone shook their heads in a hurry. Sydney’s patient list was always full, and the nurses under her command received the highest pay. No one wanted to give that up.

The toys full

Without another word, Sydney turned to the female patient. The woman, likely in her fifties, no longer looked indignant. Her expression had turned sheepish.

“Don’t listen to their nonsense,” she muttered. “I sure as hell don’t believe any of that garbage.”

Sydney gave a small, amused smile. “Alright.”

Then her tone turned more serious. “What did I tell you at your last follow–up?”

The patient hesitated, then answered with a guilty look “To stay in good spirits.”

“Then don’t let nonsense like this throw you off. A good mood is the best medicine.” Sydney’s voice was gentle as she offered the advice.

Then she slipped on her white coat and walked into her consultation room, calling in the next patient.

Midway through the morning, the same nurse returned, this time to plead with Sydney not to reassign her. The other doctors‘ consultation rooms might offer an easier schedule, but the pay was lower.

Sydney didn’t even look at her. She had never claimed to be nice–just a good doctor. Her refusal was swift

and flat.

By the time Sydney finished prescribing for her last patient, it was nearly 1:00 p.m.

As she leaned back and stretched her shoulders, Marcus burst into the room. “Syd! The surveillance footage is restored!”

Sydney raised an eyebrow. “That fast?”

The day Timothy had been injured, every camera near the fire exit had mysteriously gone offline. The police had hit a dead end.

“Yeah.” Marcus set a takeout bag on her desk. “You haven’t eaten yet, right? It’s from that new place nearby. Try it.”

“Thanks.” Sydney didn’t stand on ceremony. She opened the bag and started eating. “Did you watch the footage?”

Marcus didn’t answer. Instead, he asked, “Wanna take a guess how Timothy really got hurt?”

His voice carried a bitter edge–not toward her, but toward the situation itself.

Sydney took a bite of her gnocchi and swallowed. “Penelope did it?”

Marcus froze. “How did you know?”

“I guessed.”

He looked shaken, as if he still couldn’t process what he’d seen. “But even a wild animal wouldn’t attack its

own offspring…”

Sydney took a sip of her drink and met his gaze. “Marc, humans aren’t always better than animals when it comes to emotions.”

Sometimes, human nature was worse than a beast’s.

Marcus stared at her with even greater respect. She saw people for what they were but still chose to be kind.

That was rare.

He finally returned to the topic. “The audio and video clearly show you only went toward the fire exit after hearing someone scream.”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 94

The surveillance footage made one thing clear: Sydney had rushed in to save someone.

Marcus continued, “As for the rest, there’s not much let to say. Penelope and Timothy entered the fire escape together. After Timothy screamed, Penelope came out from a different stairwell.

“She then took the elevator back up to the third floor, thinking she could erase the surveillance footage and pin everything on you.

“And now look–she’s facing the consequences.”

“Not necessarily,” Sydney replied lightly, smiling as she finished eating and started tidying her desk. “With Caleb backing her, she might never face any consequences at all.”

The case had already moved into litigation, pushed forward by Penelope. Whoever had hurt that child should have been held accountable. At least, that was how it should have gone.

Marcus frowned, unable to understand how anyone could love someone so blindly they ignored right and wrong. “You mean…”

“I’ll call the police first,” Sydney said, cutting him off with quiet resolve. “Let them come copy the footage.”

She needed to clear her own name before anything else.

The police arrived quickly.

Within an hour, two officers had been dispatched to Lumosa Clinic. The case wasn’t major in itself, but the Hampton family’s influence had turned it into a political minefield. The faster it was handled, the better.

One of the officers was the same woman who had taken Sydney’s statement before. She and her partner stepped out of the car almost in sync and walked up to the front desk.

Flashing her badge, she asked politely, “Hello, we’re from the Jouleston Police Department. Could you tell us where Mrs. Hampton is?”

She made sure to remain courteous throughout. In Jouleston, the last two families anyone wanted to offend were the Hamptons and the Sterlings.

“Mrs. Hampton?” the front desk nurse repeated, blinking in confusion. “Which Mrs. Hampton?”

“Caleb Hampton’s wife,” the officer clarified.

“Ah?” The nurse blinked again, stunned.

So Penelope had already married into a wealthy family? She’d always told them she and Caleb were just dating.

Grinning, the nurse said cheerfully, “She’s on the third door, in Dr. Ryan Morales’s consultation room. I’ll take you.”

“Thank you,” the officer replied.

They headed upstairs.

Penelope had been napping. When the door opened, her eyes were still drowsy. Then she heard the nurse teasing her, “Penny, the police are here to see Mrs. Hampton!”

The title jolted Penelope awake. She forced a smile, hoping the police would treat her gently, given her relationship with Caleb. “Is there a problem?”

“Apologies,” the female officer said flatly.

Then she turned to the nurse and corrected her, “I’m looking for Mrs. Hampton, not Ms. Monroe. You may have misunderstood.”

“Huh? Isn’t Ms, Monroe Mrs. Hampton?” The nurse blinked, clearly thrown. “You just said you were looking for Mr. Hampton’s wife, didn’t you?”

That couple should be Caleb and Penelope. That’s what everyone had assumed.

“You’re right. We are looking for Mr. Hampton’s wife,” the officer said. “But according to our records, Mrs. Hampton is not Ms. Monroe.”

‘If it isn’t Penelope, then who?‘ the nurse wondered in bewilderment.

At that moment, a voice called from the hallway, “You’re the officers here to copy the surveillance footage, right?”

They turned and saw Sydney walking toward them.

The female officer smiled faintly. “Yes, Mrs. Hampton.”

The nurse stood frozen. A few nearby doctors and nurses stopped in their tracks, staring.

‘Wait, what? If Dr. Wilson is Mr. Hampton’s wife… then who the hell is Penelope?‘ they all wondered.

Chapter 95

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 95

Sydney led the two police officers into the surveillance room. Marcus was already waiting.

Once they finished watching the footage, the officers‘ expressions changed.

“Mrs. Hampton, please wait a moment,” the female officer said.

“Alright,” Sydney replied calmly.

The male officer stepped outside to make a phone call. He returned a few minutes later, met Sydney’s eyes, and said, “Mrs. Hampton, the case has been dropped. We won’t need to copy the surveillance footage after

all.”

There was no doubt whose orders they were following.

Marcus hadn’t expected Caleb to sink this low. Their mentor had been right all along. Caleb, inside and out, had never been worthy of Sydney.

Sydney didn’t seem surprised. “Got it. By the way, can I sue Penelope for defamation?”

The male officer looked uneasy but offered a warning. “That might be hard to prosecute.”

Whatever the reason, Sydney didn’t care to ask. She smiled faintly. “Alright. Thank you for coming all this way.”

After Marcus walked the officers out, Sydney lingered in the surveillance room, composing herself before heading back to her office to change. She still needed to get to Sterling Corp.

What she didn’t realize was that word had already spread through the clinic. Everyone knew now that Penelope was the mistress.

A crowd had gathered outside Sydney’s consultation room.

At the front stood the nurse she’d reassigned that morning. The nurse looked deeply ashamed. When she saw Sydney, she mustered her courage. “Dr. Wilson, I’m sorry. I really didn’t know Penelope had been lying to us, making us believe you were the ”

Her voice cracked. Anger overtook her face, and the rest of the staff looked just as furious.

Penelope happened to walk by at that moment, her face sullen.

Someone muttered with biting sarcasm, “These days, if your skin’s thick enough, even a mistress can strut around like she’s the legal wife.”

“Dr. Wilson, we really misunderstood you.”

Sydney finally understood what had happened. The police visit hadn’t just cleared her name but had also exposed Penelope.

Jasmine, one of the few staff who had never believed the rumors, stepped forward. “Next time, don’t let yourselves be used like pawns. Dr. Wilson’s already done more than enough to look out for us.”

Sydney smiled and patted her shoulder. “It’s two o’clock Let’s all get back to work.”

She returned to her office, changed out of her white coat grabbed her bag, and headed for the parking lot.

Sydney was just about to get in her car when Penelope stormed over, seething. “Sydney, are you satisfied now?”

Sydney raised an eyebrow. “Satisfied with what?”

She wouldn’t be satisfied until the divorce papers were in her hands.

Her calm demeanor only enraged Penelope further. “How can you always act like you don’t care about anything? Everything that’s happened, wasn’t it all your plan?”

Sydney frowned. “Am I the one scheming? Or is it you?”

The words hit Penelope like a slap. She inhaled sharply, her voice trembling with rage. “Don’t think you’ve won. No matter what, Caleb will always take my side. You may be Mrs. Hampton, but so what?”

She had clearly made peace with that. Her expression was smug.

“Oh. Then congratulations,” Sydney said, still cool. “You’re officially the most publicly recognized homewrecker in town.”

She had no interest in arguing further. She shut the car door with finality.

To be fair, Penelope wasn’t wrong. Even knowing Penelope had hurt his own son, Caleb still chose to clean up after her. The man was hopeless.

By the time Sydney reached the lab, Charlotte had already arrived–arms full of snacks for everyone.

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 96

Chapter 96

Everyone was responsible for the project, so Henry called the whole team to the lounge for snacks. Sydney understood the value of being part of the group, so she went along.

She hadn’t expected Charlotte to pull her aside the moment she arrived. “Syd, are you alright after last night? The way Mr. Sterling talks… He doesn’t mean anything by it. That’s just how he is. Don’t take it personally.”

“I’m fine.” Sydney was caught off guard and couldn’t quite read her tone. “Thanks for the snacks.” Julian had made it clear he wanted nothing to do with her. So why was Charlotte being so friendly?

“No need to be so formal.” Charlotte smiled, then turned to the three men from the Medicine team and added lightly, “Don’t underestimate Syd just because she’s a woman. I expect full cooperation from everyone.”

Sydney lowered her voice. “Ms. Lindstrom, you don’t need to treat me like a kid sister. Whatever you think is going on between me and Mr. Sterling–it’s not like that.”

Charlotte’s smile deepened. “Oh? Then what kind of relationship is it?”

She didn’t wait for an answer before continuing, “Still, I think he cares about you. Like family, maybe.”

She had never seen that dazed look on his face before. Not until that night.

Before Sydney could reply, Charlotte handed her a slice of cake with an open, easy expression. “Whatever’s going on with Mr. Sterling, I think you and I get along just fine.”

Sydney accepted it. “Thanks.”

Charlotte clearly held sway at Sterling Corp.

One should show courtesy where it was due.

Toward the end of the workday, a receptionist popped her head in and called teasingly, “Team Lead Wilson, your husband’s here to pick you up.”

“My husband?”

“Yeap Says his name’s Caleb ”

night between them had never happened.

Sydney avoided his eyes. “Why are you here?”

“As your husband, do I need a reason to pick you up?” Caleb took her bag without asking and added, “I wrongly accused you. I owe you an apology.”

Sydney hesitated, then looked up at him. “Honestly, whether you apologize or not doesn’t change anything.

There was nothing between them anymore.

“Still upset?” As they walked toward the elevators, Caleb pressed the button, slipped an arm around her shoulders, and leaned close to coax her. “I was wrong. I shouldn’t have blamed you without knowing the truth. Can’t you let it go?”

The elevator doors opened before he could finish.

Sydney instinctively stepped away and met a pair of dark, unreadable eyes.

It was Julian. A flicker of mockery passed over his face before he gave a soft, dry laugh. “Ms. Wilson getting picked up from work like a kindergartner?”

She hadn’t expected anything civil from him.

Caleb was unbothered. He simply smiled and glanced at Charlotte, who stood beside Julian.

“Once you fall for someone, Mr. Sterling, you’ll understand.” His tone was light and teasing.

He and Sydney stepped into the elevator. Even the usually composed Charlotte flushed slightly.

She lowered her head, only to hear Julian say in a low voice, “Then why don’t you go pick your sweetheart up sometime?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 97

Charlotte didn’t quite understand what that line meant, but the atmosphere in the elevator turned awkward

in an instant.

Sydney noticed the flicker of discomfort on Caleb’s face and almost laughed. Then she looked up and met Julian’s direct, unwavering gaze.

“Ms. Wilson, seems like you’re not too busy on the project. No need for overtime?”

It was a jab without bias. He spared no one.

Every word reeked of textbook capitalism, as if he wanted everyone to work themselves into the ground.

Sydney’s smile faltered. She replied stiffly, “What’s left can be done from home.”

“Oh?” Julian tilted his head, thoughtful. “Even a hopeless romantic like you still has energy for after–hours work?”

Sydney rarely felt embarrassed, but she wanted nothing more than to throw herself down the elevator shaft right now.

Everyone probably assumed she had wanted to marry Caleb out of obsessive love.

Caleb certainly didn’t notice her discomfort. If anything, he looked pleased, chuckling softly. “Don’t tease her. She’s a shy girl.”

The elevator arrived smoothly at B1.

As the group stepped out, another elevator door opened nearby. A department director rushed out, panting, and hurried to Julian. “Mr. Sterling, there’s an urgent file that needs your signature.”

Julian immediately straightened. He took the folder, pulled a fountain pen from his suit pocket, and signed his name in fluid strokes.

Sydney recognized the handwriting. It was strong and deliberate, Julian had taught her calligraphy once, and her own writing still carried traces of his style.

She was about to look away when her gaze caught on the pen in his hand, She froze. “Mr. Sterling, why do you have that pen?”

it was a irthday gift she had given Bruce. It was a one at a kind, custom–made fountam pen. There shouldn’t have been another like it.

“He gave it to me,” Julian said casually

He raised an eyebrow, capped the post, and slipped it blote his pocket. “Said it suited me. So you’re the one who gave it to lum?”

Why would Bruce think a pen with a tiny suited hulian? He didn’t seem like someone who believed in light at all

After she and Caleb lett, Charlotte’s eyes drifted to the pen still poking from Julian’s pocket. At last, she exhaled quietly

Not long ago, Julian had suddenly stopped using the pen he’d carried for years. He seemed to treasure this new one, even handling the daily cleaning himself. He didn’t let anyone else touch it.

For days, Charlotte had felt uneasy. Every time she saw that pen, suspicion crept in. She had feared he might be interested in another woman. But now that she knew it had come from Sydney, it made sense. There was nothing strange about cherishing something from his sister.

Caleb took Sydney to a high–end restaurant. He had booked out the entire place. It was clearly his way of apologizing. It was meant to be sincere.

“About what happened with Timmy, I really did misunderstand you,” he said, sitting across from her after they ordered. “As for the harsh words you threw at me the other night, let’s just pretend I never heard them, alright?”

With the restaurant empty, only soft piano music lingered in the background. It felt like a scene from a romantic drama. If they were following the script, the female lead would let it go.

Sydney simply listened to the music and smiled faintly. “And what about Penelope? She accused me. You once told me to apologize to her. Shouldn’t she be the one apologizing to me now?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 98

Caleb rubbed his fingers together, frowning. “She just panicked at that moment.”

“Was it really panic, or was it premeditated? Haven’t you already figured that out?”

Sydney marveled at his refusal to face the truth. She held his gaze, calm and steady, until he finally exhaled and looked away. “Syd, I know she crossed the line. I’ll make it up to you on her behalf-”

He hadn’t even finished before the phone on the table buzzed.

Sydney didn’t need to check the screen. The look on his face told her exactly who it was–Penelope.

“Sorry, I need to take this.”

Sydney smiled faintly. “Go ahead.”

He had brought her here to apologize, hadn’t even waited for the food to arrive, and already he was walking away to take a call from the person who started it all.

‘What a joke,‘ she thought.

“Ma’am? Miss?” The server had to call her twice before she blinked and looked up. A dish had already been

set in front of her.

“Hm? What is it?”

“Your companion must have left this pendant on the chair.”

The server held it out to her. “Could you keep it for him, so it doesn’t get lost?”

“Sure. Thanks.” She accepted it without thinking, but the moment her eyes landed on it, everything around her dropped away. Her mind went blank.

This was her pendant. It was identical to the one stolen from her years ago at the orphanage.

She had searched for it over the years, but she hadn’t stayed long back then. She couldn’t remember the name of the girl who had taken it. By the time she returned, the orphanage was gone.

She had wanted to look, but there had been nowhere to start.

And now, without warning, it was back in her hands.

Before she could process what was happening, someone snatched the pendant from her. She lunged for it on instinct, her fingers grasping at empty air.

She hadn’t been able to fight back as a child. However, she wasn’t a child anymore. This was the one thing her parents had left her, and she wasn’t going to lose it gain.

“Give it back!”

“Give it back?” Caleb gave her a confused look. “Penny’s had this since she was little. I can’t just hand it

over.”

Sydney took a breath, steadying herself. “It belongs to Penelope?”

“Yeah.”

Thinking she was simply upset, Caleb dropped a piece of cod onto her plate with a shrug. “There’s a charity auction in a few days. Come with me. You can pick out whatever you want. It’ll be my way of apologizing, okay?”

She barely heard him. Her thoughts were locked on the pendant.

“Can I see it again?” she asked. Her eyes were fixed on it.

“See it? Sure,” he said and placed it in her palm.

She took it gently, and fingers brushed the inside.

Soon, she saw it. Her nickname. It was etched into the metal in her father’s careful handwriting.

This pendant had carried all her parents‘ hopes for her. A peaceful life. For their precious girl to grow up safe and sound.

There was no doubt. This was hers. Not Penelope’s.

In fact, Penelope was probably the same girl who had bullied her back at the orphanage–the one who had stolen this pendant. Now, years later, she had set her sights on her husband, tried to steal her job, and wanted to insert herself in her project.

Penelope had spent a lifetime trying to take what didn’t belong to her.

Still gently rubbing her thumb over the engraving, Sydney looked up with a chuckle. “Oh? Her nickname’s Precious too?”

When The Ocean Learned My Name and Whispered It Back to You by Aurelia Novel 99

Chapter 99

Caleb suddenly turned to her, eyes sharp and unblinking “Also? Who else goes by the nickname Precious?”

It wasn’t exactly rare. Plenty of kids were called that growing up. Still, the way he was staring made Sydney feel uneasy.

She dropped her gaze, hiding her reaction. “No one. Just figured it’s a pretty common name.”

Today had already shown her how far Caleb would go to protect Penelope. If he found out Penelope used to bully her? He’d take her side again. Or worse, he’d let Penelope twist the truth and play the victim.

And Sydney wasn’t even completely sure. Not yet. ‘But this pendant…‘

She pressed her lips together, then looked up with an innocent expression. “Cal, this pendant is really unique. Can I borrow it for a few days? I have a friend who makes jewelry. I want to get one just like it.”

Maybe it was guilt over what happened to Timothy. Or maybe he’d always known he owed her more than he could repay. Either way, faced with Sydney’s soft, slightly pleading look, Caleb hesitated, then nodded. ” Okay.”

S

Still, thinking of how much the pendant meant to Penelope, he added gently, “Just be careful with it, alright? Don’t let it get scratched.”

“Sure,” Sydney said, nodding with rare sincerity.

It was one of the few moments in recent memory when she had shown that kind of emotion around him. Even Caleb seemed briefly thrown, as if he’d caught a glimpse of the sweet, obedient girl he used to know.

He reached out and patted her head. “Alright. Eat up. See if the food suits your taste.”

“Okay.” This time, Sydney actually meant it. Now that she had found something so important to her again,

even the food tasted better.

…

After eating, they left the restaurant together.

It was still early, but the short winter days had already cloaked Jouleston in dazzling lights.

They walked side by side to the car.

As always, Caleb played the gentleman and opened the door for her. “Come on. It’s been a while since we went home together.”

Sydney slid one hand into her coat pocket and rubbed the smooth, warm pendant tucked inside. Her mind was already racing, trying to find a polite, reasonable excuse to turn him down.

She’d made her decision the day she moved out of Viridian Garden. No matter what, she wasn’t going back- not even for one night to keep up appearances.

Just as she started scrambling for an excuse, her phone buzzed in the other pocket.

She didn’t bother checking the caller ID. Whoever it was whatever they wanted, she’d take it as her out. Even if it turned out to be a scam call.

It wasn’t a scam. Thankfully, it was Tiffany. And as if they were perfectly in sync, Tiffany’s cheerful voice came through the line. “You off work yet? You’re not pulling overtime, right? Hurry back! I’ve got a surprise for you!”

Sydney blinked. “Surprise?”

Tiffany sounded smug. “Yeap! Just come back quickly. Twenty minutes tops. I’m not waiting!”

“Okay, I’m heading there now.”

As soon as the call ended, the weight on her chest eased She turned to Caleb with a relaxed smile. “Tiff asked me to stop by. You go ahead first.”

He’d overheard enough of the call to recognize Tiffany’s voice. But Caleb wasn’t clueless. As Sydney turned to leave, he swallowed hard and asked, “Syd… you’ve already moved out, haven’t you?”

Sydney froze. She hadn’t expected him to ask. Or maybe she’d just stopped expecting him to notice anything at all. Most of those three years, she hadn’t even seen him at home.

Caleb stayed so busy that he often forgot he still had a wife at home.

Sydney paused, then turned back to look at him. “How did you find out?”

She didn’t bother denying it.

Caleb wasn’t surprised, yet a strange pressure filled his chest, making it hard to breathe.

“I guessed,” he forced out.

Sydney smiled faintly. “I thought you’d never notice.”

He stared at her. The tightness in his chest made his brow furrow. “Am I really that incompetent as a husband?”

“You’re very competent,” Sydney said, her smile deepening. “Just only when it comes to Penelope.‘

He was not a good husband, but he was an excellent lover. She meant what she said.

When the words reached Caleb’s ears, they felt more like a slap in the face. He exhaled slowly, trying to ease the pressure in his chest. “I’ll make sure she moves out soon. When that’s done, I’ll come pick you up.”

“We’ll see,” Sydney replied, leaving the rest unsaid.

Those words made Caleb feel even more suffocated. He almost panicked and grabbed her wrist. “What does that mean? You’re not planning to come back?”

Sydney wanted to nod and admit it. The yet–to–be–obtained divorce papers still shackled her, though.

“No. You’re overthinking,” she replied. “Alright, Tiff only gave me 20 minutes. I better go.”

She pulled her wrist back gently, adjusted her cashmere coat, and strode away.

Caleb sat in his car. Sydney’s calm and almost indifferent gaze remained fresh in his mind. She had not always been like this.

Unfamiliar anxiety swept through him. No matter what Sydney was thinking, he was still her legal husband. The thought settled his heart a bit.

As long as he withheld his consent, she would always be his Mrs. Hampton.

…

The restaurant sat across the street from the Sterling Corp. building.

Sydney went to the company’s underground garage to get her car, then drove home.

She was still unlocking the fingerprint lock when she heard a commotion inside the house. The moment she opened the door, a loud bang exploded beside her ear.

Multicolored confetti fluttered through the air.

Startled, Sydney looked up just in time to see Tiffany toss the party popper aside and run toward her, throwing her arms around her. “Babe! Congrats on single life again!”

Glancing at the bright colorful decorations in the living room, Sydney laughed out loud. It looked less like a divorce celebration and more like someone was getting married.

“You’ve been working on this all day?” she asked.

“Not just me.” Tiffany pointed toward the kitchen and gave her a knowing wink. “Marcus helped too. He’s been here since the afternoon.”

All three of them were alumni of Jouleston University. When Tiffany had just started at her law firm, Sydney had introduced her to Marcus.

According to Tiffany, anyone with a pulse was a potential client. Someone like Marcus with family wealth to boot? Definitely a premium one. They had grown familiar quickly after that.

Sydney looked a little surprised. “No wonder he didn’t show up at the lab today.”

“Of course not. Marcus knows how to prioritize,” Tiffany said meaningfully.

Sydney shot her a sideways glance. “Don’t start matchmaking again.”

She had married up with the Hampton family. Marrying into the Shepard family would be a similar scenario.

Her relationship with Marcus had always stayed in a good place–not too close, not too distant. She liked it

that way. Just the right amount of comfort.

“Syd,” said Marcus.

He walked out of the kitchen carrying a dish, apron still on, looking every bit like the sunny, dependable older brother next door. “Tiffany told me you finally got your divorce papers. Congratulations.”
