June It was dark outside when I left the arena, and there were only a few cars remaining in the parking lot. I was on autopilot, thinking about Elias’s acceptance and how the team was currently in first place in their division. I was also glad that I’d gotten out of work early, because it

June When I took the job with the Atlanta Reapers, I was worried about how I would be treated. More specifically, I was concerned about sexism. I was a woman who was replacing Andy, a trainer who was notoriously competent and well-liked. I was afraid it would take years for the testosterone-filled players to respect me. But

June The team had a road trip to the Northeast to play the Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and Philadelphia 76ers. Rather than pay for long-term parking at the airport, most of the players and staff parked at the arena and took the team bus to the plane. It was fun having

June I hated seeing the team lose. It made me feel helpless, sitting on the bench and watching them struggle. It was a harsh reminder that even though I felt like part of the team now, I was secondary. Whether they won or lost was ultimately up to the players on the ice. On a

Rhett When I was a teenager, I was head-over-heels in love with Heather Luzar, the most beautiful girl at my school. Of course, everyone was in love with Heather Luzar because she was drop-dead gorgeous, and friendly to literally everyone in our class. After pining after her for weeks, my dad sat me down at our kitchen

June I’d spent the entire drive over to the restaurant thinking about Rhett, wondering if it was a mistake to go out with his teammate like this. But I was having such a great time with Cole that I forgot all about it. Now our sizzling training room affair loomed large. We weren’t exclusive or

June The next day was a busy one. First, I took my car to the dealership to complain about the spark plug crapping out on me. Three mechanics examined the car, and eventually said that nothing could explain what had happened. “Maybe an animal got under the hood and damaged it?” the head mechanic eventually
