Monday, Kim wasn’t at work. She hadn’t returned from her
weekend off. She didn’t show up again the next day, or the
next. Sophie asked the other nurses if everything was okay with
Kim. Nobody seemed to know anything other than she had called
in sick. Christy and Suzanne were concerned. They all agreed it
wasn’t like Kim to be out so many days in a row.
Sophie called Rihanna and asked if Sheldon could find any
thing out about Kim and why she hadn’t been to work. As soon as
Sophie hung up the phone, Amanda walked by the pod. Sophie
called out and waved her over.
“Do you have any idea where Kim is? She hasn’t been at work
for the past few days.”
“Why would I know where Kim is?” Amanda looked confused.
Sophie grabbed Amanda’s arm. “What do you know about
Kim?” she asked again through clenched teeth. “Where the hell
is she?”
Amanda looked at her like she was crazy. “I don’t know.” She
shook her arm free from Sophie’s grip. “Really, I have no idea.”
Sophie’s phone rang, giving Amanda a chance to escape.
“Sophie, are you sitting down?” It was Rihanna. “Kim was in
a terrible car accident. She went off the road while she was driv
ing the Jersey Turnpike. They took her to the closest hospital,
stabilized her, then transported her to a hospital in Philadelphia,
where her parents live. It sounds bad.”

Sophie slumped into the chair, deflated. What the hell hap
pened? As she processed this piece of news, a little flag went up
in her head. Her intuition was yelling at her to pay attention.
She was certain there was a lot more to the story. Why did Dr.
Wagner have to bring Kim into this? Rage burned inside her. This
is getting out of control.
